Protesting teachers block Mexico president from daily televised address

MEXICO CITY, Aug 27 (Reuters) - Mexican teachers in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas on Friday blocked President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador from entering a venue in the regional capital where he was due to hold his daily televised news conference.

The leftist president was forced to deliver his remarks via a video call on his phone from a car in Tuxtla Gutierrez, the capital of Chiapas, while inaudible protesters shouting and speaking on a megaphone could be heard in the background.

Mexico shelters five women from Afghan robotics team

MEXICO CITY, Aug 26 (NNN-TELESUR) — The Mexican government of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) received five Afghan women members of a robotics team and the partner of one of them.

“We may be very far from what is happening in Afghanistan. However, the human cause, the protection of values, and the causes that identify Mexicans today, have made us commit ourselves so that they are in Mexico,” Foreign Affairs Minister Marcelo Ebrard said.

Mexico to brief media about U.S. court decision on 'Remain in Mexico'

MEXICO CITY, Aug 25 (Reuters) - Mexican President Andres Manual Lopez Obrador said on Wednesday that the foreign ministry would hold a news conference later in the day about the U.S. Supreme Court decision reinstating the "Remain in Mexico" immigration policy.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday denied President Joe Biden's bid to rescind an immigration policy implemented by his predecessor, Donald Trump, that forced thousands of asylum seekers to stay in Mexico awaiting U.S. hearings.

Hurricane Grace makes a mess of Mexico’s Mayan Riviera

TULUM, Mexico (AP) — Hurricane Grace struck Mexico’s Caribbean coast just south of the ancient Mayan temples of Tulum on Thursday, tearing the roofs off some homes, knocking out power to thousands and keeping tourists off white sand beaches as it crossed the Yucatan Peninsula.

The push across land weakened the storm, but by evening it was centered back over water — the Gulf of Mexico — and the U.S. National Hurricane Center said it was again regaining strength as it headed for a collision with the Mexican mainland late Friday or early Saturday.

Hurricane Grace soaks Mexico’s Caribbean coast

TULUM, Mexico (AP) — Hurricane Grace pelted Mexico’s Caribbean coast with heavy rain and strong winds overnight, threatening to keep tourists off the white sand beaches until it crosses the Yucatan Peninsula.

The Category 1 storm had already soaked earthquake-damaged Haiti, Jamaica and the Cayman Islands en route to a direct hit on the Riviera Maya, the heart of Mexico’s tourism industry.

Quintana Roo state opened shelters and evacuated some hotels and residents ahead of the storm’s arrival. Popular cruise ship destination Cozumel and hip Tulum were in the storm’s path.

Developing southern Mexico key aim of U.S. talks, Ebrard says

MEXICO CITY, Aug 17 (Reuters) - Promoting development in southern Mexico will be a key objective of the so-called high level economic dialogue to be held between the United States and Mexico next month, Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said on Tuesday.

Speaking at a regular news conference, Ebrard said border infrastructure and creating economic opportunities in Central America will also be central to the agenda.

Mexico declares drought emergency

MEXICO CITY, Aug 13 (NNN-EFE) — The National Water Commission (CONAGUA) declared the beginning of an emergency because of the occurrence of severe, extreme, or exceptional drought in the Mexican watersheds.

This declaration will allow the authorities to establish transitory measures to guarantee the provision of water for domestic use, in urban cities, and in basins in drought conditions. These measures include limiting existing water rights and reducing the volumes of water allowed to different users.

U.S., Mexico to discuss border reopening, agree on more vaccines

MEXICO CITY, Aug 10 (Reuters) - Senior U.S. and Mexican officials will meet on Tuesday to discuss plans to reopen their shared border, and Washington has agreed to send Mexico up to 8.5 million more coronavirus vaccine doses, Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said.

Ebrard told reporters U.S. Homeland Security chief Alejandro Mayorkas and national security adviser Jake Sullivan will meet in Mexico City for talks with their Mexican counterparts as part of a drive to get cross-border activities back to normal.

Some 44% of Mexicans, 56 million, were considered poor at the end of 2020: Gov’t

MEXICO CITY, Aug 9 (NNN-MERCOPRESS) — Of the 126 million Mexican population, almost 44% were considered poor at the end of 2020, according to official data from the government.

In effect, 3,8 million Mexicans fell below the official poverty line last year to reach 56 million compared with the end of 2018, when current president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador took office.
