Battered survivors tell of Mexico truck crash that killed 55

TUXTLA GUTIERREZ, Mexico (AP) — Simply counting up the human cost of the horrifying truck crash that killed 55 migrants and injured over 100 is chilling, even for those who survived the disaster on a highway in southern Mexico.

About 40 of the survivors were listed with “multiple contusions” at local hospitals late Friday, and they were the least injured.

54 dead after truck smuggling migrants crashes in Mexico

TUXTLA GUTIERREZ, Mexico (AP) — Rescue workers arriving at a road accident in southern Mexico found a horrific scene: A tractor trailer jammed with as many as 200 migrants crashed into the base of a steel pedestrian bridge, killing 54 and injuring dozens.

The migrants inside the tipped-over trailer were tossed and crushed in a pile of both the living and the dead.

Mexico moves migrants from southern state; asylum seekers awaited at US border

MEXICO CITY, Dec 7 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Mexican officials have sped up the transfer of thousands of migrants from southern Mexico to other regions as northern border states prepare to receive asylum seekers sent back to Mexico from the United States.

Dozens of buses full of migrants, mostly from Central America as well as some from Cuba and Venezuela, have left the city of Tapachula in Chiapas state in recent days to head to other states, an activist said on Monday.

(AP) --- Alabama, Florida and Mississippi are receiving more than $103 million in BP oil spill settlement money for new and continued coastal projects.

“These projects, combined with existing investments, continue to advance our goal of protecting and restoring species and habitats impacted by the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill,” Jeff Trandahl, executive director and CEO of the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, said Thursday.

Clashes as Mexico City marches against gender violence

MEXICO CITY, Nov 27 (NNN-EFE) — Clashes took place in Mexico City on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women as thousands marched to condemn gender violence, which kills at least 10 women a day in the country.

“In Mexico, ten women continue to disappear every day, and every minute and we find them raped or murdered,” María del Carmen Volante, whose daughter Pamela disappeared four years ago after attending a concert on the outskirts of the capital, told Efe.

Mexico pulls migrants from southern ‘prison’ city, warding off another caravan

TAPACHULA (Mexico), Nov 26 NNN-AGENCIES) — Mexican officials have begun dispersing several hundred migrants gathered in the southern city of Tapachula by busing them to other states, heading off the prospect of a new caravan heading north.

The migrants, mostly from Haiti and parts of Latin America, had been in limbo in Tapachula in Chiapas state while enduring lengthy waits for asylum and visa requests to be resolved.

Mexico president says had no major differences at U.S., Canada talks

MEXICO CITY, Nov 22 (Reuters) - Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said on Monday his meetings with U.S. President Joe Biden and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Washington last week were fruitful and played out without any major differences.

Lopez Obrador was speaking at a regular government news conference.

Migrant camps grow in Mexico amid uncertainty on US policy

TIJUANA, Mexico (AP) — As darkness fell, about 250 police officers and city workers swept into a squalid camp for migrants hoping to apply for asylum in the United States. Migrants had to register for credentials or leave. Within hours, those who stayed were surrounded by enough chain-link fence to extend twice the height of the Statue of Liberty.

The Oct. 28 operation may have been the beginning of the end for a camp that once held about 2,000 people and blocks a major border crossing to the United States. There may be more camps to come.

Migrant caravan overwhelms Mexican National Guard, resumes march to U.S. border

MEXICO CITY, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- A migrant caravan traveling on foot through southern Mexico to the U.S. border on Thursday overwhelmed the Mexican National Guard trying to contain its advance and resumed its march toward Mexico City.

The migrants and guard members clashed on the highway linking the towns of Pijijiapan and Tonala in Chiapas state, leaving at least two guard members injured and many people arrested, according to local media reports and images posted on social media.

Gas blasts rock central Mexican city, killing at least 1

MEXICO CITY (AP) — A series of explosions, apparently caused by an illegal tap on a natural gas line, rocked the central Mexico city of Puebla before dawn Sunday, killing at least one person, injuring 11 and damaging dozens of homes, authorities said.

Puebla state Gov. Miguel Barbosa said an emergency call warning of a gas smell and cloud in the area gave officials about 80 minutes to evacuate some 2,000 people living as far as a kilometer (about s half mile) from the leak before the first of three explosions, which came shortly before 3 a.m.
