Covid-19: Mexico aims to give population at least one vaccine dose by October

MEXICO CITY, May 19 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Mexico aims to ensure its population has had at least one COVID-19 vaccine shot by October before the onset of colder weather, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said.

Mexico has so far distributed nearly 24 million vaccine doses to its population of 126 million, and Lopez Obrador said he was sure it would receive more shots from the United States.

By July, health authorities will begin providing vaccinations to people as young as 40, he told a regular news conference.

Mexico City to pay damages to victims of deadly metro accident

MEXICO CITY, May 9 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Mexico City will pay the equivalent of US$2,000 to the families of 26 people killed when an elevated metro line collapsed, city hall’s official gazette said.

Around US$500 will be paid to the approximately 80 people injured in the accident, the publication added.

The cash is meant as short term compensation to help cover food, transportation and other expenses, the gazette said.

It did not specify if more in damages will be paid to the families or this disbursement is definitive.

Families mourn victims of Mexico City subway collapse

MEXICO CITY (AP) — José Luis Hernández Martínez crossed Mexico City every day on subway Line 12 between his home on the city’s south side and the body shop where he worked repairing mangled cars.

The 61-year-old’s train had emerged from beneath the city and was jostling along the elevated portion far from downtown late Monday night when two of its bright orange cars suddenly fell into a void.

Mexico City metro overpass collapses onto road; 13 dead

MEXICO CITY (AP) — An overpass in Mexico City’s metro collapsed Monday night, sending a train plunging downward onto a road, trapping cars under rubble and killing at least 13 people, authorities said.

Mexico City’s civil protection agency tweeted that almost 70 people were injured in the accident in the south of the capital and were being taken to nearby hospitals.

“A support beam gave way,” said Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum, who had rushed to the scene of the accident, which happened at about 10:30 p.m. local time.

Mexico receives new shipment of COVID-19 vaccines from Chinese company Sinovac

MEXICO CITY, April 25 (Xinhua) -- Mexico has received the seventh shipment of the COVID-19 vaccines produced by Chinese company Sinovac, which will help accelerate the national inoculation plan, the Ministry of Health reported on Sunday.

The CoronaVac vaccines arrived Saturday night at Mexico City's international airport, the ministry explained in a statement.

Mexico to begin clinical trials of COVID-19 vaccine "Patria"

MEXICO CITY, April 13 (Xinhua) -- Mexico plans to begin phase 1 clinical trials of "Patria," a locally-developed vaccine against the novel coronavirus, the National Council for Science and Technology said Tuesday.

Phase 1 trials on humans follow initial testing on animals, and will be carried out between April and May with around 100 volunteers aged 18-55 who are completely healthy, said Maria Elena Alvarez-Buylla, director of the council, at a press conference.

A man who helped board the migrants for the five-minute boat ride Sunday from Guatemala across the Usumacinta River knew the count because each one received a ticket.
