Russia rejects bank compromise as Black Sea grain expiry looms

04 July 2023; MEMO: Russia, on Tuesday, restated a demand for its state agricultural bank to be reconnected to the global SWIFT payments system and said it would not accept a reported compromise proposal, Reuters reports.

With 13 days remaining until expiry of the deal that has allowed Ukraine to export grain from its Black Sea ports despite Russia's invasion, Moscow said there had been no progress on any of its key demands, including the banking issue.

Palestine: Thousands displaced again by Israel's operation in occupied West Bank

05 July 2023; MEMO: Thousands of people were evacuated from the Jenin refugee camp, as one of Israel's biggest West Bank military operations in years continued for a second day on Tuesday, and a car-ramming in Tel Aviv underlined the risk of violence spreading, Reuters reports.

UN Security Council to meet on Friday over Israeli raids in occupied West Bank

05 July 2023; MEMO: The UN Security Council will convene on Friday to discuss the deadly escalation following Israeli attacks on the Occupied West Bank city of Jenin, Anadolu Agency reports.

The 15-member Council will meet in closed consultations, said the UK mission to the UN, which holds the organ's rotating presidency for July, on Twitter.

The meeting was requested by the United Arab Emirates.

UN rights council to hold emergency session to discuss Quran burning in Sweden

05 July 2023; MEMO: The United Nations Human Rights Council will hold an emergency session later this week to discuss the burning of the Quran in Sweden, a spokesman said Tuesday.

Last Wednesday, a man – identified as Salwan Momika – burned a copy of the Quran under police protection in front of Stockholm Mosque, causing outrage.

US judge removed from 'judicial duties' over racist comments against Arabs

03 July 2023; MEMO: A US judge accused of making racist remarks and "witness interference and tampering" has been removed from his judicial duties in Cook County, Illinois.

Attorney Matthew Fakhoury said in a recent lawsuit that Judge William Hooks made inappropriate and racist comments about Arab-American men in a meeting with prosecutors in January.

Jordan calls for 'immediate action' to halt Israeli military operation in Jenin

03 July 2023; MEMO: Jordan called on Monday for immediate action by the international community to halt the Israeli military operation in the Palestinian city of Jenin in the occupied West Bank. Six Palestinians were killed by the Israeli army earlier today, including five in Jenin, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry. Twenty-seven Palestinians were wounded.

Palestine: Israeli air strikes and ground raids on occupied West Bank's Jenin

03 July 2023; MEMO: The Israeli occupation army raided houses in the Jenin camp, killing three  Palestinians, in the early hours of today.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health announced the deaths of Samih Abu Al-Wafa, Aws Hani Hanou, and Hasim Abu Theeba, adding that 13 others were injured, three seriously.

Israel stops Al-Aqsa restoration works

03 July 2023; MEMO: Israeli occupation authorities have warned officials at Al-Aqsa Mosque against undertaking any restoration work inside the holy compound, the Palestinian Information Centre reported today.

Israeli police prevented the Al-Aqsa Reconstruction Committee from entering the mosque and carrying out work yesterday evening.

India: Delhi court to pass order on sexual harassment cognisance against BJP MP Brij Bhushan

New Delhi, Jul 1 (PTI) A Delhi court on Tuesday posted for July 7 the pronouncement on whether to take cognisance of the charge sheet filed by the Delhi police against BJP MP and outgoing WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh in a case of alleged sexual harassment of women wrestlers.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) Harjeet Singh Jaspal, who was scheduled to pass the order on Saturday, noted the submission of the city police that its probe is still in progress and a supplementary charge sheet is likely to be filed.

India: 3-judge SC bench starts hearing activist Setalvad's plea seeking interim protection

New Delhi, Jul 1 (PTI) A three-judge Supreme Court bench commenced hearing late on Saturday night the plea by social activist Teesta Setalvad seeking interim protection from arrest in a case of alleged fabrication of evidence to frame innocent people in 2002 post-Godhra riots cases.

A bench of Justices B R Gavai, A S Bopanna and Dipankar Datta is hearing the matter in a special sitting after a two-judge vacation bench differed on granting interim protection to Setalvad.
