Israel calls for use of administrative detention against African migrants

04 September 2023; MEMO: Israel has decided to use administrative detention against African migrants accused by the police of rioting, Maan news agency reported yesterday.

The Israeli occupation government also decided to cancel work permits given to migrants living in Israel.

Israel: 7 million demonstrated against judicial overhaul: Police chief

04 September 2023; MEMO: Nearly seven million Israelis have demonstrated against government plans for judicial overhaul since January, according to the Police Commissioner on Monday, Anadolu Agency reports.

The Israeli protesters have “gathered at 4,400 locations across the country,” Kobi Shabtai said in statements during an event at the Israeli Bar Association as cited by Haaretz newspaper.

Israel students refuse to serve in military under 'fascist' government

04 September 2023; MEMO: A group of over 200 Israeli students have announced their refusal to be drafted into the army, citing the rise of “fascism “and dictatorship under the new far-right government.

In a letter displayed at a protest in Tel Aviv, the students said they “will not draft until democracy is guaranteed to everyone who lives under Israeli rule.” 

Judicial reforms will lead Israel soldiers to be sued in int’l courts

05 September 2023; MEMO: Israeli Military Prosecutor Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi yesterday warned that aspects of the proposed judicial reform plan will put Israeli troops in danger of being prosecuted abroad in international courts.

This came, Israeli media said, during a speech at a conference of Israel’s Bar Association in Tel Aviv, noting that the remarks were considered as criticism against the government’s judicial plan.

UN criticises France for banning abaya in schools

30 August 2023; MEMO: The spokesperson for the United Nations’ Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) yesterday criticised France’s decision to ban girls from wearing the abaya (black loose fitting dress) in schools.

On Sunday, French Education Minister Gabriel Attal told the local TF1 TV channel that wearing the abaya will no longer be allowed in schools.

Pakistan court extends ex-PM Khan’s detention

31 August 2023; MEMO: A Pakistani court yesterday extended the judicial remand of the country’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan for another 14 days in a case in which he is accused of “exposing state secrets”, court records show.

The hearing was held at a prison in the northeastern Attock district – where Khan is currently being held – for “security reasons”.

01 September 2023; MEMO: Two former heads of the Israel’s Shin Bet intelligence agency have called on US President Joe Biden not to “legitimise” the Israeli government’s extremism, xenophobia and “coup” by inviting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the White House during his visit to the US next month.

Israel summons Belgium envoy after ‘wiping entire Palestinian villages of map’ remark

01 September 2023; MEMO: Israel has summoned the Belgian ambassador for dressing down after a minster said that “entire [Palestinian] villages are being wiped off the map by the Israelis.” A letter of protest has also been sent to the Belgium Foreign Ministry claiming that the remarks are “libelous and defamatory.”

The comments were made by Belgium’s Minister for International Development, Caroline Gennez. Speaking to the Flemish daily De Morgen, Gennez said:
