India: Sena MP tells Centre to act against people demeaning women

Mumbai, Jul 30 (PTI) The Shiv Sena on Friday asked the Centre to take strict action on apps demeaning and targeting women.

In a letter to Union Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Shiv Sena Rajya Sabha MP and spokesperson Priyanka Chaturvedi said such nuisance cannot be tolerated.

She said some months ago a Youtube channel conducted a "live auction" of women from a particular community, with ratings being given on the basis of physical appearance and derogatory comments being uploaded.

12-year-old becomes 77th child killed by Israel this year

29 July 2021; MEMO: Mohammed Al-Allami, a 12-year-old boy, was shot dead by the Israeli occupation forces in the town of Beit Ummar near Hebron in the occupied West Bank. He became the 77th Palestinian child killed by Israeli forces in 2021.

Al-Allami was shot in the chest when a soldier opened fire at a car driven by his father at the entrance to Beit Ummar, the Palestinian Ministry of Health said in a statement yesterday.

Turkey opposition leader offers Austria $3.6bn to house all Afghan refugees

29 July 2021; MEMO: A Turkish opposition leader has offered Austria €3 billion ($3.56 billion) to take all the Afghan refugees residing in Turkey, in reaction to the Austrian prime minister's suggestion last week that Turkey should keep all refugees within its borders.

The chairman of Turkey's IYI (Good) Party, Meral Aksener, condemned Sebastian Kurz's comments as inappropriate on Tuesday, stating: "This tactless Austrian prime minister said that all Afghans should stay in Turkey and he could pay us."

Egypt's continuous state of emergency devastating for rights abuses

29 July 2021; MEMO: The continued application of the state of emergency in Egypt has had a devastating effect on human rights abuses, concludes the Committee for Justice (CFJ) in a recent report.

For decades Egyptians have suffered under emergency and martial law, "a whip in the hands of Egypt's rulers to strengthen their power and grip on society," according to the CFJ.

Ben & Jerry's: 'We are proud Jews and support Israel but oppose settlements'

However, they conveyed in an opinion piece published by The New York Times on Wednesday: "It's possible to support Israel and oppose some of its policies, just as we've opposed policies of the US government."

Budaun (UP), Jul 29 (PTI) A 21-year-old woman was allegedly stabbed to death here by her family members for marrying against their wishes, police said on Thursday.

The victim has been identified as Archana, a resident of Palia Gujar under Dataganj police station area here, they said.

India: Hurriyat demands Mirwaiz Umar Farooq's release

Srinagar, Jul 29 (PTI) The Hurriyat Conference on Thursday demanded the release of its chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, saying his fundamental rights and civil liberties stand completely curbed for the last two years.

The demand for the release of Mirwaiz was made following a meeting of the executive committee of the Hurriyat Conference held at the residence of Bilal Lone.

"Hurriyat Conference executive members seek his (Mirwaiz) immediate release from illegal arbitrary house detention by the state authorities," the amalgam said in a statement.
