Fearing international uproar, Bennett to postpone Sheikh Jarrah evictions

28 July 2021; MEMO: Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett is expected to postpone the Sheikh Jarrah evictions, a source close to him told an Israeli newspaper on Tuesday, citing Bennett's fear of international uproar.

On Monday, the Israeli Supreme Court is scheduled to hold a hearing session to decide whether to evict four Palestinian families in Sheikh Jarrah.

India: Delhi riots: HC stays Rs 25,000 costs on Delhi Police

New Delhi, Jul 28 (PTI) The Delhi High Court Wednesday stayed the imposition of Rs 25,000 costs on the police in a case related to north-east Delhi riots but refused to interfere with the trial court's strictures against its investigation at this stage.

We can't expunge the remarks without hearing you (Police). Costs may not be deposited till the next date of hearing, said Justice Subramonium Prasad who was hearing Delhi Police's challenge to the trial court order calling its investigation into the case callous and farcical and imposing Rs 25,000 costs.

India: J-K to be granted statehood at appropriate time: Govt

New Delhi, Jul 28 (PTI) Jammu and Kashmir would be granted statehood at an "appropriate" time after normalcy is restored there, the government told Parliament on Wednesday.

Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai stated this in a written reply to Rajya Sabha.

He was replying to a question on whether the government had any proposal to "reinstate" the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir and whether some efforts have been made to end the year-long ban on different means of communication.

Daniel Hale, 33, told a federal judge he felt compelled to leak information to a journalist out of guilt over his own participation in a program that he believed was indiscriminately killing civilians in Afghanistan far from the battlefield.

26 July 2021; MEMO: Sudanese judoka Mohamed Abdalrasool has withdrawn from the Olympics Games in Tokyo after being absent from a scheduled fight against an Israeli opponent.

Abdalrasool was set to face Israel's Tohar Butbul in the men's 73kg division today, but did not show up in the round of 32 despite weighing in for the bout earlier.

Tunisia security storm Al Jazeera office, expel journalists

26 July 2021; MEMO: Tunisian security forces have stormed the offices of Al Jazeera and expelled its staff, the media group announced on social media.

"Security forces involved in the raid said they were carrying out instructions and asked all journalists to leave," it added on its website.

Egypt journalists call for release of political prisoners

26 July 2021; MEMO: Hundreds of Egyptian journalists have called for the release of all political prisoners, local media reported yesterday.

In an official note, the Journalists Syndicate called on the country's public prosecutor, the attorney general and the administration of the western Cairo Tora prison to free their colleague Hisham Fouad, who they said has been on a hunger strike for two weeks.

"Egyptian authorities must urgently intervene to provide the necessary health care to Fouad and save his life from danger," they said.
