India: Kashmiri leader Mehbooba placed under house arrest again

Srinagar, Sep 29 (PTI) PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday claimed that she has been put under house arrest again as she had planned to visit Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir.

The former chief minister had on Tuesday alleged that Army personnel had thrashed a family in Tral town of Pulwama and injured a female member. Mufti said she was going to meet the family on Wednesday.

India: 9-year-old girl raped in UP's Bareilly

Bareilly (UP) Sep 29 (PTI) A 25-year-old man was arrested for allegedly raping a nine-year-old girl here, police said on Wednesday.

An FIR was registered against the accused based on a complaint by the minor's father at the Izzatnagar police station, they said.

According to the complaint, the man raped the girl in a drunken state at his home on Saturday, Senior Sub Inspector Swadesh Pal Singh said.

The incident came to light after the minor fell sick, he said.

UN: Palestinian economy crippled by virus, Israeli occupation

28 Sep 2021; MEMO: The year 2020 was the worst for the Palestinian Authority (PA) since its establishment in 1994 due to the Israeli occupation and the coronavirus pandemic, the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) said yesterday.

UNCTAD said in its annual report that the PA's economic decline in 2020 was a continuation of its already bad economic conditions in 2019.

It blamed the COVID-19 and measures taken by the Israeli occupation for the economic downturn across the occupied Palestinian territories.

Egypt arrests professor who criticised pro-regime media personalities

28 Sep 2021; MEMO: Egyptian security forces have arrested an Egyptian media professor, Ayman Mansour Nada, who criticised media figures close to the regime.

In a series of articles circulated on social media, Nada said that the opposition media abroad had reached a wider audience among Egyptians than the media within Egypt.

In his article, Nada accused official agencies of exerting control over the media.

PA welcomes UK Labour Party's motion on Israeli 'apartheid'

28 Sep 2021; MEMO: Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas welcomed the passing of a motion at the UK Labour Party conference on Monday that recognised Israel as an "apartheid" state and called for sanctions against it, as well as the immediate recognition of Palestine, Wafa news agency has reported.

India: Received unprecedented response to Bharat Bandh (Close India) call: Combined Farmers Union (SKM)

New Delhi, Sep 27 (PTI) The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), a united front of over 40 farmer unions protesting against three agriculture laws of the Centre, on Monday said its call for a "Bharat Bandh" received an "unprecedented and historic" response from more than 23 states and not a single untoward incident was reported from anywhere.

It, however, said Monday's events were "unfortunately marked by three farmer deaths", adding that more details are awaited.

Palestine: Hamas will avenge Palestinians killed by Israel army in the West Bank

27 Sep 2021; MEMO: Deputy chairman of Hamas political bureau, Saleh Al-Arouri, said yesterday that the movement will not be silent about the Israeli army's murder of five Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, adding that their blood "will not be in vain".

"Every drop of the martyrs' blood will have a price," Al-Arouri said in a statement posted on the group's website.

Egypt detaining owner of dairy company who refused to cede assets: Amnesty

27 Sep 2021; MEMO: Egyptian authorities are holding the founder of the country's largest dairy products and juices producer and his son in conditions that amount to torture because of their refusal to cede their assets, Reuters reported Amnesty International saying today.

There was no immediate response to a request for comment to Egypt's state information service.
