Human rights system improving in Egypt: Sisi

22 Sep 2021; MEMO: Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi yesterday claimed that his country is working to reinforce human rights, citing the launch of the National Strategy for Human Rights earlier this month, Al-Khaleej Online reported.

The remarks came as part of his speech to the UN General Assembly being held in New York.

India: Elgar case: court rejects medical bail plea of Shoma Sen

Mumbai, Sep 21 (PTI) A special NIA court here on Tuesday rejected an application filed by academician Shoma Sen, an accused in the Elgar Parishad-Maoist links case, seeking interim medical bail.

Judge D E Kothalikar rejected 61-year-old Sen's plea.

Her application had cited her age and claimed that she suffered from multiple ailments including osteoarthritis, glaucoma and high blood pressure which could make her vulnerable to COVID-19.

Palestinians launch campaigns calling for Abbas to step down

20 Sep 2021; MEMO: Palestinian activists yesterday launched campaigns and petitions calling for Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas to step down after 15 years in office, Safa news agency reported.

Palestinian writer and activist Mohammad Shoukry said: "Such campaigns and petitions are part of the rights enshrined to the Palestinian people."

Israel soldiers break Palestinian physician's arm

17 Sep 2021; MEMO: Israeli soldiers assaulted a 46-year-old Palestinian physician from the town of Arraba southwest of Jenin following his detention last week and broke his arm.

According to the Wafa news agency, Nidal Arda found Israeli occupation forces in army jeeps surrounding his home after he returned from the mosque following dawn prayers.

"They were waiting at my house and apparently wanted to ambush me. The jeeps turned their lights on in my direction and then ordered me to come out of the car," he said.

Palestine PM calls on Norway to pressure Israel to release tax revenues

17 Sep 2021; MEMO: Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Shtayyeh yesterday called on Norway to pressure Israel to release withheld Palestinian tax revenues.

This came during a videoconference with Norway's Foreign Minister, Ine Marie Eriksen Soreide, to discuss the latest political and economic developments, the WAFA news agency reported.

Israelis stab Jerusalemite bus driver

17 Sep 2021; MEMO: A Jerusalemite bus driver was injured this morning after a group of Jewish Israelis stabbed him in the occupied Holy City, the Palestinian Information Centre reported.

According to local sources, the settlers stabbed Mohamed Abu Nab twice in the back in West Jerusalem's Givat Shaul neighborhood, built on the ruins of the depopulated Palestinian village of Deir Yassin.

Palestinian factions form joint operations room in Jenin

17 Sep 2021; MEMO: The Palestinian resistance factions announced yesterday the formation of "a joint operations room" in the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank, Anadolu has reported. The military wings of Fatah, Hamas and Islamic Jihad are all involved, the first time that the three movements have joined forces in such joint action.

Iran fuel travel from Syria into Lebanon

16 Sep 2021; MEMO: Hezbollah began bringing Iranian fuel into Lebanon via Syria today, a move the group says should ease a crippling energy crisis but which opponents say risks provoking US sanctions, Reuters reports.

Dozens of trucks carrying Iranian fuel oil entered northeastern Lebanon near the village of Al-Ain, where Hezbollah's yellow flag fluttered from lampposts.

"Thank you Iran. Thank you Assad's Syria," declared a banner, referring to Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad.
