Palestine: Israel denies electricity to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip

05 Oct 2021; MEMO: For fifteen years, the Israeli occupation authorities have denied a regular electricity supply to the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. The suffocating siege imposed by Israel has left the residents unable to find a simple solution to the electricity problem, which affects all civil society sectors serving Palestinians and their essential institutions.

05 Oct 2021; MEMO: The Israeli High Court of Justice (HCJ) has provided the four Palestinian families in the East Jerusalem neighbourhood of Sheikh Jarrah an offer which would allow them to remain in their homes for 15 years as "protected tenants".

Egypt's Bread and Freedom Party cofounder spends two years in pretrial detention

05 Oct 2021; MEMO: Egyptian political activist Mohamed Walid has completed two years in pretrial detention after being arrested in September 2019 at Cairo Airport.

Walid was on his way to Saudi Arabia, where he worked, after returning from a holiday in Egypt after being forcibly disappeared during which time he was tortured.

According to another party cofounder, Elham Aidaros, on the day he went missing, Walid had his passport stamped and was inside the airport.

Israel: Recaptured Palestinian prisoner starts hunger strike

05 Oct 2021; MEMO: Mohammed Al-Arida, one of six Palestinian prisoners who escaped from Israel's high-security Gilboa Prison on 6 September and was recaptured days later, yesterday started an open-ended hunger strike protesting the strict detention conditions he is being held under, the PLO's Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs Commission said.

Ethiopia's PM sworn in for a second term as war spreads

Addis Ababa, Oct 4 (AP-PTI) Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has been sworn in for a second five-year term running a country in the grip of a nearly year-long war.

Abiy's Prosperity Party was declared the winner of parliamentary elections earlier this year in a vote criticised and at times boycotted by opposition parties but described by some outside electoral observers as better run than those in the past.

Palestine: Gaza farmers protest Israel restrictions on exports

04 Oct 2021; MEMO: Palestinian farmers in the Gaza Strip are facing hardships and working at a loss as a result of the terms set out for exports by the Israeli occupation authorities.

Holding a protest yesterday, farmers said rules – which include the transport of goods to their intended buyer without lids – mean they are damaged and do not reach their intended markets in a good condition, leaving the farmers out of pocket as they do not subsequently get paid for them.

Palestine: PA calls for extremist settlers to be added to global terror lists

04 Oct 2021; MEMO: The Palestinian Authority (PA) called on states worldwide to enlist members of settlement organisations and groups on terror lists, a statement issued by the Foreign Ministry said.

Settlement groups and their armed members should be added to terror lists as a result of their "aggression on Palestinians citizens," the statement said, reiterating that they should be prosecuted and prevented from travelling freely.

India: Farmer's union front (SKM) asks Prez Kovind to sack MoS Home Ajay Mishra

New Delhi, Oct 4 (PTI) The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) on Monday wrote to President Ram Nath Kovind, demanding that Minister of State for Home Ajay Mishra be sacked in connection with the violence in Uttar Pradesh's Lakhimpur Kheri.

Eight people were killed on Sunday as violence erupted during a farmers' protest in Lakhimpur Kheri, claiming the lives of both farmers and BJP workers ahead of a visit by UP Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya.

India: Arrested Assam Cong MLA suspended from party

Guwahati, Oct 4 (PTI) The Assam Congress on Monday suspended its MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed with immediate effect for repeatedly violating the party's discipline, a senior leader said.

APCC president Bhupen Kumar Borah, by an order, suspended Ahmed from the Congress, party general secretary Bobbeeta Sharma said.

Ahmed was arrested from his official residence on Saturday for allegedly making provocative remarks in reference to the recent eviction drive in Darrang district.
