India: BJP leader Bagga's arrest stayed till July 6 by HC

Chandigarh, May 10 (PTI) In a reprieve for BJP leader Tajinder Pal Singh Bagga, the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday stayed his arrest till July 6 in a case of allegedly making provocative statements, promoting enmity and criminal intimidation.

No coercive action will be taken against Bagga till July 6 when the case will come up for hearing next, Additional Solicitor General Satya Pal Jain, who appeared on behalf of the Delhi Police, said after the court heard the matter.

India: 9-year-old girl raped and murdered by relative in MP

Datia, May 10 (PTI) A nine-year-old girl was allegedly raped and murdered by a distant relative during a marriage function in Madhya Pradesh's Datia district, a senior police official said on Tuesday.

The crime took place in Tiletha village on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday and the 24-year-old accused was later arrested, Superintendent of Police Aman Singh Rathore told reporters.

Some villagers informed personnel at the Goraghat police station on Monday morning that the body of a girl was lying in shrubs near a canal in the village, he said.

India: Uproar at Kanpur's DAV College disrupts admit card distribution

Kanpur: Kanpur university Examinations admit card disbursement work was being conducting at DAV College premises here on Monday. Hours later there was an uproar and the work was disrupted.

When the office clerk was approached he simply said I could do nothing. They disturbed the process. 

The students who did not get the admit card remained real sufferers of the noisy spectacle.

First, there was slogan shouting by striking employees of the college and later the students raised the slogans in protest.

Pakistan: Imran Khan’s remarks against state institution a conspiracy; needs to be stopped immediately: PM

ISLAMABAD, May 9 (APP): Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif Monday said that the statement by ex-prime minister Imran Khan against a national institution was in fact a conspiracy against Pakistan and the institution, which needed to be stopped immediately to avert chaos.

The prime minister, in his address at the National Assembly, said if the situation was not controlled, Pakistan could meet a fate like Syria and Libya.

India Reports 3,207 New COVID-19 Cases

NEW DELHI, May 9 (NNN-PTI) – India’s COVID-19 tally rose to 43,105,401 today, with 3,207 new cases registered during the past 24 hours across the country, showed the federal health ministry’s latest data.

Of the new cases, 1,422 were reported from Delhi. Presently there are 5,939 active cases in the national capital, and the positivity rate stands at 4.98 percent.

Besides, as many as 29 deaths were reported across the country due to the pandemic since yesterday morning, taking the total death toll to 524,093.

Sri Lanka Stops Supplying Gas For Domestic Use

COLOMBO, May 9 (NNN-XINHUA) – Sri Lanka’s leading liquefied petroleum gas supplier, Litro Gas Lanka Limited, today said that, they are unable to supply gas to domestic consumers, until new stocks arrive.

Litro Gas chairman, Vijitha Herath said, only industrial gas stocks are available at the moment, and the company asked people not to wait in queues.

Herath said that, they expect to pay seven million U.S. dollars today, to import liquefied petroleum gas on Friday and Saturday.

Cyclone Asani intensifies into severe cyclonic storm in India

NEW DELHI, May 9 (Xinhua) -- The cyclone Asani, which formed in the southeast Bay of Bengal intensified into a severe cyclonic storm and moved in the direction of north Andhra Pradesh-Odisha coasts, officials said Monday.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the cyclone will not make landfall in Andhra Pradesh or Odisha and will weaken gradually during the next 24 hours.

Sri Lankan prime minister resigns after weeks of protests

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) — Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned Monday following weeks of protests demanding that he and his brother, the president, step down over the country’s worst economic crisis in decades.

Rajapaksa said on Twitter that he submitted his resignation to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. There was no immediate comment from the president’s office.

India: BJP leader shot dead over land dispute in J'khand

Lohardaga (Jharkhand), May 9 (PTI) A local BJP leader was shot dead in his sleep in Jharkhand's Lohardaga district early on Monday, police said.

The incident took place at Chatakpur village in Kuru police station area around 2 AM, officer-in-charge Anil Kumar said.

The deceased has been identified as Ratan Mahato, a BJP booth committee president. He was rushed to Rajendra Institute of Medical Science (RIMS) at Ranchi but he died on the way, the officer said.

India: Protests erupt as bulldozers roll into Delhi's Shaheen Bagh

New Delhi, May 9 (PTI) Protests erupted in Shaheen Bagh on Monday with hundreds of people, including women, opposing the SDMC's anti-encroachment drive as bulldozers rolled into the area in the presence of heavy police personnel.

Following the protest, the SDMC officials, who were part of the anti-encroachment drive, returned with bulldozers without conducting the exercise, an official said.
