India: BJP has anti-reservation agenda, alleges JD(U)

Patna, Oct 13 (PTI) Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's Janata Dal (United) on Thursday charged the BJP, its former ally, with working on an agenda to do away with reservations for backward classes.

JD(U) national president Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lalan also alleged that the recent Patna High Court order that declared as illegal quotas for OBCs/EBCs in urban local body polls in the state, was a result of a conspiracy .

Lalan made the allegations at a demonstration held near the historic Gandhi Maidan here.

India: SC delivers split verdict in Karnataka hijab ban matter, matter referred to CJI

New Delhi, Oct 13 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Thursday delivered a split verdict on a batch of pleas challenging the Karnataka High Court judgement refusing to lift the ban on hijab in educational institutions of the state.

While Justice Hemant Gupta dismissed the appeals against the high court verdict, Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia allowed them.

India: Five held in a raid at spa center in Kanpur's Aryanagar

Kanpur: Five people including three women have been arrested in a raid conducted on a spa center at Aryanagar here.

The Colonelganj police raided the spa center in Arya Nagar organising prostitution.

Police have arrested five people, including three women from Mizoram.

Prostitution rackets are reported to be operating from these centers.

Under the directions of ACP Colonelganj Amarnath Yadav, SHO Ratnesh Singh raided the Spa Center in Arya Nagar.

Indian Navy’s MIG-29K aircraft crashes off Goa

NEW DELHI, Oct 12 (NNN-Bernama) — A MIG-29K aircraft of the Indian Navy crashed off Goa on Wednesday.

The aircraft was on a routine sortie over the sea when it developed a technical malfunction while returning to its base, the navy said in a statement.

The pilot ejected safely and was recovered in a search and rescue operation.

The pilot was reported to be in a stable condition.

An inquiry has been ordered to find the cause of the incident, the navy said.

Pakistan’s Remittances Decreased 10.5 Percent In Sept: Central Bank

ISLAMABAD, Oct 12 (NNN-APP) – Remittances sent by overseas Pakistani workers decreased 10.5 percent in Sept, 2022, on a month-on-month basis, the State Bank of Pakistan said.

The workers’ remittances recorded an inflow of 2.4 billion U.S. dollars in Sept, as compared to the previous month’s figure of 2.7 billion dollars, the central bank said, in its official data yesterday, adding that, it decreased by 12.3 percent on a year-on-year basis.

Pakistan: PM to participate in CICA summit in Kazakhstan

ISLAMABAD, Oct 11 (APP): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will participate in the 6th Summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) being held in Astana, Kazakhstan, on 12-13 October. 

The prime minister will be accompanied by members of the cabinet and senior officials, Foreign Office Spokesperson said in a press release on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will address the plenary meeting of CICA on 13 October. 

India, UAE discuss trade in national currencies

NEW DELHI, Oct 11 (NNN-Bernama) — India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have discussed using their national currencies for bilateral trade as the two countries seek to broaden their economic relations.

Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and Abu Dhabi Executive Council member Sheikh Hamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Tuesday co-chaired a UAE-India joint business committee meeting in Mumbai to discuss expanding trade and investments.

Indian Supreme Court refuses to entertain plea to declare cow as national animal

New Delhi, Oct 10 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Monday refused to entertain a plea seeking a direction to the Centre to declare cow as a national animal.

A bench of Justices S K Kaul and Abhay S Oka asked the petitioner what fundamental right was being affected.

"Is this the job of the court? Why do you file such petitions where we are compelled to impose costs? Which fundamental right is violated? Should we throw law to the winds because you come to court? the bench said.

India: Rape survivor set ablaze by accused's family in UP

Mainpuri, Oct 10 (PTI) A 15-year-old girl, pregnant after she was raped three months back, was allegedly set on fire by the mother and sister of the accused, police said on Monday.

After learning about the pregnancy, the mother-daughter duo took the minor to their house on the pretext of getting her married to the accused. However, later on Saturday night, they poured kerosene on the girl and set her ablaze, they said.

India: SP patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav dies at 82

Gurugram/New Delhi/Saifai, Oct 10 (PTI) Samajwadi Party founder and three-time Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav, who spawned the state's most prominent political clan and played a key role on the national stage, died Monday after prolonged illness. He was 82.

The former defence minister was admitted to Gurugram's Medanta Hospital in August and shifted to its Intensive Care Unit on October 2.
