India: Punjab bans import of poultry items due to bird flu concerns

Chandigarh, Jan 8 (PTI) The Punjab government on Friday banned the import of poultry birds from other states with immediate effect till January 15.

"The government of Punjab imposes complete ban on import of live birds, including poultry and unprocessed poultry meat, for any purpose into the state of Punjab," the order issued by the state Animal Husbandry Department stated.

The decision will be reviewed based on the evolving situation, it said.

India: Farmers hold protest against BJP in Punjab's Sangrur

Chandigarh, Jan 3 (PTI) A group of farmers on Sunday held a protest in Punjab's Sangrur district against state BJP chief Ashwani Sharma who was there to meet party leaders.

The protesting farmers even tried to break barricades put up near the residence of a local BJP leader, forcing the police to use mild force to disperse them.

The farmers, shouting slogans against Sharma, wanted to gherao him in protest against the Centre's three farm laws

India: Case lodged over 'death threat' to Punjab Chief Minister

Mohali, Jan 2 (PTI) Police have registered a case against an unidentified person here over a poster that issued a death threat against Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh.

The poster was pasted on a guide map near the Sector 66-67 crossing and 10 lakh dollars was offered for killing the chief minister, according to police.

An email ID was also found written on the poster. Investigations are underway and footage of the CCTV cameras installed near the spot are also being scanned, police said.

India: AAP leader Raghav Chadha meets 'arhtiyas'

Chandigarh, Jan 2 (PTI) AAP leader Raghav Chadha on Saturday met 'arhtiyas' or commission agents who were recently raided by the Income Tax Department.

Chadha, who is AAP Punjab co-incharge, accused the Centre of harassing the commission agents for supporting farmers who were up in arms against the Centre's three farm laws.

India: 2 arrested for espionage in Ludhiana

Ludhiana, Dec 31 (PTI) Police on Thursday arrested two people for allegedly supplying photographs and other important information regarding activities of the IAF airbase at Halwara near here to Pakistan.

Police said the accused were identified as Sukhkiran Singh and Ram Dass Singh, both residents of Tusa village near Jagraon in Ludhiana district.

Both worked at the Halwara airport earlier, police said.

India: Farmers attempt to block Punjab BJP leader's house

Chandigarh, Dec 25 (PTI) Farmers owning allegiance to the Bharti Kisan union (Rajewal) on Friday attempted to gherao the house of a Punjab BJP leader in Jalandhar where a function was being held on the birth anniversary of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Farmers tried to break barricades and police prevented them from doing so, following which a commotion took place in which headgears of some farmers were tossed up, police said.

India: Punjab farmer commits suicide

Chandigarh, Dec 20 (PTI) A 22-year-old Punjab farmer, who returned from a protest site near Delhi border, has allegedly committed suicide after consuming some poisonous substance, the police said on Sunday.

Gurlabh Singh, a resident of Dayalpura Mirza village of Bathinda district, had been part of the protest near the Delhi border.

He had returned to his village on Friday, they said.

The police said he consumed some poisonous substance on Saturday at his home.

He was taken to the nearest hospital where he was declared brought dead .

India: Centre trying to intimidate arhtiyas (commission agents): Punjab CM

Chandigarh, Dec 19 (PTI) Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Saturday accused the Centre of adopting intimidatory tactics against arhtiyas by conducting income tax raids on their premises.

He warned that such draconian measures will further aggravate the angst of people against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Union government.
