India: Dalit hacked by upper caste in-laws in presence of officials

25-year-old Haresh Kumar Solanki, a Dalit man, was hacked to death by eight men outside his wife’s house, allegedly by his upper-caste in-laws, in the presence of a women’s helpline team in Varmor village of Ahmedabad district Monday evening.

Solanki, from Gandhidham in Kutch, married Urmila Zala, who is two months pregnant, almost six months ago but her parents, disapproving the inter-cast marriage, had brought her back to Varmor.

India: Man gets 10 years in jail for slaughtering a calf

Ahmedabad, Jul 7 (PTI) A court in Gujarat's Rajkot district has sentenced a person to 10 years of imprisonment and imposed Rs 1 lakh fine for slaughtering a calf.

The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge H K Dave Saturday sentenced Salim Makrani under the Gujarat Animal Preservation (Amendment) Act, 2017.

An FIR was registered on the basis of a complaint by one Sattar Koliya in January this year in which he accused Makrani of stealing his calf, slaughtering it and serving it at the wedding feast of the latter's daughter.

India: SC convicts 12 persons in Haren Pandya murder case

New Delhi, Jul 5 (PTI) The Supreme Court convicted 12 persons on Friday in the 2003 murder case of former Gujarat home minister Haren Pandya.

The apex court allowed the appeals of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Gujarat government challenging the high court order by which the convicts were absolved of the murder charge in the case.

The trial court had convicted the accused persons for the offence of murder and sentenced them to life imprisonment.

India: Gujarat owes over Rs 2.40 lakh crore in public debt

Gandhinagar, Jul 3 (PTI) With a steep rise of over Rs 23,000 crore in one year, Gujarat's public debt now stands at Rs 2,40,652 crore as per the revised estimates of 2018-19, the Legislative Assembly was informed on Wednesday.

Responding to a written query raised by Congress MLA Niranjan Patel during the Question Hour, Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel, who handles the Finance portfolio, said in his written reply that as per the revised estimates for 2018-19, Gujarat owes Rs 2,40,652 crore, a rise of Rs 23,314 crore from 2017-18.

India: SpiceJet plane overshoots runway on landing

Surat, Jun 30 (PTI) A SpiceJet plane Sunday overshot the runway while landing at the Surat Airport, although none of the passengers and crew members on board were hurt in the incident, an airport official said.

The incident, which occurred around 8.15 pm, was a result of heavy rain and wind, the official said.

"A SpiceJet flight from Bhopal to Surat overshot runway at the airport here due to heavy rainfall and wind. All the 43 passengers and four crew members are safe and they are being handled by the SpiceJet officials," Surat airport director S K Panigrahi said.

India: Dalit sarpanch's husband killed in Gujarat: eight held

Botad, Jun 20 (PTI) Eight persons were arrested in Botad district of Gujarat Thursday for allegedly killing the husband of a Dalit sarpanch.

Manjibhai Solanki (51), resident of Jalia village, was beaten to death on Ranpur-Barvala road in the district Wednesday.

His wife Geeta Solanki is the sarpanch of Jalia.

India: Ex-Gujarat cop Sanjiv Bhatt gets life

Jamnagar, June 20;  IANS/GANASHAKTI: A Gujarat court on Thursday sentenced sacked IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt to life imprisonment in a three-decade-old custodial death case, finding him guilty of murder.

Jamnagar District and Sessions Court Judge D.M. Vyas also awarded similar penalty to police constable Pravinsinh Jhala.

The verdict came after the Supreme Court last week rejected Bhatt's application seeking fresh examination of witnesses in the case, contending that this was key to arrive at a proper judgment.

India: Man held for molesting woman in flat

Ahmedabad, Jun 19 (PTI) A man was Wednesday arrested for allegedly molesting a woman after entering a flat that provides paying guest service for women, police said.

The accused, Bhavin Shah, who works as a food delivery man, was picked up on a tip-off after he was caught in the act on a CCTV camera, a Navrangpura police station officer said.

The incident occurred on June 14 midnight when the man, later identified as Shah, entered the flat in Kamal Nayan Apartment in Navrangpura locality after finding its door unlocked, he said.

India: 7 suffocated to death while cleaning sewer in Gujarat

Vadodara, Jun 15 (PTI) Seven persons, including four sanitation workers, died due to asphyxiation on Saturday while cleaning sewer of a hotel in Gujarat's Vadodara district, officials said.

The incident happened at a hotel in Fartikui village in Dabhoi tehsil, about 30 km from Vadodara city.

Three employees of the hotel were also among those killed.

"When one sanitation worker failed to come out of the manhole, others went inside. All of them died due to asphyxiation," district collector Kiran Zaveri told PTI.

Cyclone Vayu spares changes course towards Oman

Ahmedabad, Jun 13 (PTI) Sparing Gujarat after changing course, Cyclone Vayu Thursday began moving away from the state coast towards Oman, even as the danger of heavy winds and rain in coastal areas continued, officials said here.

Though the "eye of the storm" is away from land, the cyclone's outer periphery would leave its impact on the coast, officials said.

State authorities have already evacuated three lakh people from low-lying areas near the coast to safer places.
