India: Private bus overturns in Gujarat; 21 dead, 50 injured

Ahmedabad, Sep 30 (PTI) At least 21 people were killed and more than 50 others injured when a packed private luxury bus overturned in Banaskantha district of North Gujarat on Monday evening, said officials.

The ghastly mishap took place at Trishulia Ghat, a hilly patch on the Ambaji-Danta road near Ambaji town of Banaskantha district, around 160km from here.

The private luxury bus, carrying around 70 passengers, overturned at Trishulia Ghat after the driver lost control of the vehicle due to heavy rain in the area, said Banaskantha district SP Ajit Rajian.

India: Guj 'fart competition' fails as no one passes wind

Ahmedabad, Sep 23 (PTI) A 'fart competition' held on Sunday in Gujarat's Surat, touted as the country's first, turned out to be a lot of hot air, though not literally, as only three participants managed to overcome shyness and inhibitions to take a shot at the three trophies on offer.

They too, however, failed to pass muster after being unable to pass wind, an organiser said.

India: Five of family die inside sewage well in Gujarat

Ahmedabad, Sep 19 (PTI) Five members of a family died of suffocation inside a well where sewage collected in Patan district of Gujarat, the police said on Thursday.

The incident took place at Gujarvada village in Sami tehsil two days ago.

The state government announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh each for the surviving members of the family.

India: Guj cop kills 3 sons after fight with wife

Bhavnagar (Guj), Sep 1 (PTI) A constable on Sunday allegedly killed his three children over a family dispute and then surrendered in Bhavnagar in Gujarat, police said.

Constable Sukhdev Siyal slit the throats of his three children at his home in the government quarters here over a family dispute on Sunday afternoon, Superintendent of Police Jaipal Singh Rathore said.

"He had a fight with his wife after which he killed his sons, Khushal (9), Uddhav (5) and Manmeet (3). Siyal was posted at the SP's office," an official said.

India: Man held for raping three-year-old girl in Surat

Surat, Aug 17 (PTI) A man was arrested on Saturday for allegedly raping a three-year-old girl living in his neighbourhood here, police said.

The accused, Ajit Vishwakarma (20), a resident of Hirabaug locality in Surat was arrested from his house, where he had sexually assaulted the girl on Thursday, police said.

India: Hardik, 2 Cong MLAs detained on way to meet Sanjiv Bhatt

Palanpur, Aug 14; GANASHAKTI: Congress leader Hardik Patel, two party MLAs and around 27 of their supporters were on Wednesday detained while they were on way to Palanpur district jail in Gujarat to meet sacked IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt, police said.

Bhatt, who was in June awarded life sentence in a custodial death case, is currently lodged at the Palanpur district jail.

India: 222 lions died in Gir forest region in 2017-19: Minister

Gandhinagar, Jul 16 (PTI) As many as 222 lions died, most of them due to natural causes, in the Gir forest region in Gujarat in the last two years, the Legislative Assembly was told Tuesday.

Among them, only 23 lions died because of "unnatural" causes such as getting hit by trains or falling into wells between June 2017 and May 2019.

India: Rahul pleads not guilty in defamation case by Ahmedabad bank, gets bail

Ahmedabad, Jul 12 (PTI) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was on Friday granted bail by a court here after he pleaded not guilty in a criminal defamation suit filed by Ahmedabad District Cooperative Bank, in which Union Home Minister Amit Shah is one of the directors, and its chairman Ajay Patel.

The defamation suit was filed by the bank against Gandhi after he alleged that it had swapped Rs 750 crore in scrapped currency with valid notes within five days of announcement of demonetisation on November 8, 2016.

India: Rahul issued summonses by two Guj courts in defamation cases

Ahmedabad, Jul 9 (PTI) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was issued summonses by two Gujarat courts on Tuesday in criminal defamation complaints filed by BJP leaders for allegedly calling Union Minister Amit Shah a "murder accused" and saying that "all thieves have Modi as surname".

Chief Judicial Magistrate B H Kapadia in Surat asked Gandhi to appear on July 16, while an Ahmedabad court ordered the Congress leader to appear on August 9.
