Germany's Greens hit poll high, ahead of Merkel's bloc: survey

7 June 2019; DW: A Deutschlandtrend poll by Infratest dimap has put the environmentalist Greens up 6 percentage points at a record 26%, one point ahead of Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservative Christian Democrats (CDU) and sister party Bavarian Christian Social Union (CSU), reflecting a similar sampling last week.

German killer nurse sentenced to life for murdering 97 patients

6 June 2019; DW: Serial killer and former nurse Niels Högel was sentenced Thursday to life in prison for the murder of 85 patients.

Högel was originally accused of having murdered 100 patients while on duty as a nurse from June 1999 until 2005. The victims, people of all ages and backgrounds, some in bad health and others on the mend, had trusted the medical centers in Lower Saxony where Högel worked with their lives.

5 June 2019; DW: Niels Högel was originally accused of having murdered 100 patients while on duty as a nurse. The victims, people of all ages and backgrounds, some in bad health and others on the mend, had trusted the medical centers in Lower Saxony where Högel worked with their lives. But their trust was betrayed.

During closing arguments at the district court in Oldenburg on Wednesday, Högel addressed friends and relatives of his victims. 

German chipmaker Infineon to buy US rival Cypress for €9 billion

3 June 2019; DW: Bavarian chipmaker Infineon is planning a multibillion-dollar takeover of United States competitor Cypress Semiconductor, the two companies said in a joint statement.

Infineon said it would pay $23.85 (€21.35) per share, a 46% premium on Cypress' average share price between mid-April and the end of May. That amounts to a €9 billion enterprise value, by far the most significant acquisition in the Bavarian firm's 20-year history.

German Social Democrat leader Andrea Nahles to step down after EU poll losses

3 June 2019; DW: Andrea Nahles has announced her resignation as leader of the center-left Social Democratic Party (SPD) and its parliamentary group, saying she wanted to give the party the chance to elect the next leader in an orderly way after disastrous European election results.

Anti-Israeli demonstration in Berlin for a just peace in Palestine

1 June 2019; DW: Some 2,000 protesters are expected to take part in an anti-Israel rally in Germany's capital, Berlin, on Saturday, amid fears that anti-Semitism is on the rise in the country.

The Quds Day (Jerusalem Day) march, whose official title is "For a just peace in Palestine," is to take place despite several calls to have it banned, notably by the head of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, Josef Schuster.

German food discounter Aldi to open first store in China

30 May 2019; DW: Supermarket chain Aldi is set to open its first store in China. The German discounter is reportedly hoping to tap into a more affluent customer base by touting sought-after products from Europe.

German discount chain Aldi Süd is preparing to launch a flagship store in the coastal metropolis of Shanghai next week, according to trade reports.

A second store is expected to follow in the near future, the Lebensmittel Zeitung newspaper reported.
