Merkel: We 'must be a country of immigration'

Chancellor Angela Merkel joined dozens of young people of immigrant background in Berlin on Tuesday to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Germany's Basic Law, or constitution.

Mercedes want to abandon combustion engines by 2039

Berlin, May 13 (AFP) German giant Mercedes-Benz said Monday it wants to stop selling traditional combustion engine cars by 2039 and plans for its new vehicles sold worldwide by that time to be carbon-neutral.

"We aim to have a carbon-neutral new passenger car fleet in 20 years," said Ola Kallenius, current head of Mercedes research, who is to succeed Dieter Zetsche as chairman of the Daimler group next week.

Brexit drives firms to relocate to Germany

13 May 2019; DW: More foreign firms are relocating their operations to Germany than ever before, according to new figures. There was a big increase in the number of British firms setting up, apparently because of Brexit.

A record 2,062 foreign companies either set up shop or expanded their operations in Germany in 2018, acording to a report released Monday.

Merkel should serve full term says heir Kramp-Karrenbauer

12 May 2019; DW: Germany's CDU, the party once led by Chancellor Angela Merkel, is now led by Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer. She insists she is not trying to push Merkel out as chancellor before 2021.

Germany's government and chancellor are "elected for a full term" and should take that responsibility seriously, CDU party chief Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer told the conservative Die Welt newspaper.

Germany: Driverless truck stopped in spectacular Autobahn action

10 May 2019; DW: A runaway truck whose driver had died at the wheel was brought to a halt on the German Autobahn by another daring driver and police. Other truck drivers took measures to protect nearby road users.

A courageous truck driver and police joined forces on Wednesday evening to bring a runaway 40-ton vehicle to a halt on the German Autobahn, police said.

Sea tribunal hears Russia, Ukraine naval dispute

10 May 2019; DW: Last November, Russia seized three Ukrainian navy ships and captured dozens of sailors, sparking outrage in Ukraine. The case is now being heard at a UN sea tribunal in Hamburg, but Russia has vowed not to show.

A naval standoff between Russia and the Ukraine will be heard before an international sea tribunal in Hamburg, Germany on Friday.

Thyssenkrupp expects EU to 'block' Tata merger plan

10 May 2019; DW: The planned merger between German steel giant Thyssenkrupp and its Indian competitor Tata will likely fall through because the European Commission is expected to block the deal.

US envoy calls Germany 'hypocritical' on NATO

9 May 2019; DW: The United States ambassador to Germany on Thursday accused the German government of pursuing a hypocritical policy toward the NATO military alliance.

"It seems hypocritical to say that we should reform NATO while not aiming for the 2%," Richard Grenell told Bild newspaper, referring to an alliance goal of spending at least 2% of gross domestic product (GDP) on defense.
