Venezuelan military split, says parliament’s envoy

MEXICO, April 30. /TASS/: The move by a group within the Venezuelan military in support of Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido shows a split within the country’s armed forces, representative of the Venezuelan National Assembly (parliament) to Mexico Reynaldo Diaz said in an interview with the Noticias MVS radio station.

Number of people detained during protests in Venezuela increased to 83

CARACAS, May 1. /TASS/: At least 83 people were detained on Tuesday in Venezuela during protests against the government, Head of Foro Penal Venezuelan non-governmental organization (NGO) Alfredo Romero said on Twitter.

"We confirm the information on 83 arrests for participation in demonstrations today," he wrote. According to NGO estimates, most people 59 were detained in Zulia state. In other regions, the number of detainees varies from one to four. Earlier, human rights activists talked about 25 people in detention.

Venezuelan opposition barricades streets in Caracas

MOSCOW, April 30. /TASS/: The Venezuelan opposition forces have taken to the streets of Caracas on Tuesday in order to declare support to the country’s opposition leader Juan Guaido. Guaido’s supporters have begun to barricade several streets in Caracas, the EFE news agency reports.

Earlier, Guaido published a video on Twitter, in which he addressed the Venezuelan military to take to the streets in order to "end the usurpation" in the country.

30 Apr 2019; DW: Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido on Tuesday called for a military uprising to oust acting President Nicolas Maduro, in a video posted alongside soldiers and opposition politician Leopoldo Lopez, who had been under house arrest.

In the three-minute video shot early on Tuesday, Guaido, the self-declared president and leader of Venezuela's opposition-controlled National Assembly, said the "final phase" had begun to end Maduro’s "usurpation" of the constitution.   

US oil sanctions take effect on Venezuela as crisis intensifies

28 Apr 2019; AFP: US sanctions came into effect Sunday to block Venezuela's economic lifeline of oil exports, in what Washington hopes will be a major blow in its fledgling campaign to topple leftist President Nicolas Maduro.

As of 12:01 am Washington time (0401 GMT), the United States will take action against anyone who deals with state-owned Petroleos de Venezuela, or PDVSA, or any entity in which the company holds at least a 50 percent stake.

Venezuela arrests five for electric system attacks

CARACAS, April 23 (Xinhua) -- Five people have been arrested and 19 others are being sought after attacks against the National Electric System (SEN) between March 7 and 28, Venezuela's Communication and Information Minister Jorge Rodriguez said Tuesday.

Speaking from the Miraflores Palace, Rodriguez presented a report on the investigation into the attacks against the electric system which caused widespread outages in March.

Venezuelan president vows to defeat "new imperialists"

CARACAS, April 19 (Xinhua) -- Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro vowed to defeat the "new imperialists who seek to rob our sacred treasure, freedom" as the country marked the 209th anniversary of the start of its independence from Spanish rule on Friday.

On April 19, 1810, Venezuelans deposed the governor and captain general, Vicente Emparan, as well as other high-ranking Spaniards, sending them into exile. A year later, in 1811, Venezuela celebrated the signing of the Act of Independence.

Venezuela slams "criminal impact" of U.S. sanctions

CARACAS, April 14 (Xinhua) -- The Venezuelan government on Sunday denounced the U.S. sanctions targeting its state-owned oil company PDVSA for the "criminal impact" on the Venezuelan people.

The sanctions blocked the country's access to oil revenues and its ability to pay for key social and health programs, the government said in a statement.

The sanctions "prevent the implementation of humanitarian aid programs for particularly difficult health cases," such as cancer, Parkinson's, epilepsy, and liver and bone marrow transplants, according to the statement.

Maduro, Red Cross agree on delivery of humanitarian aid to Venezuela

CARACAS, April 10 (Xinhua) -- Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said on Wednesday night that he had reached an agreement with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on the delivery of humanitarian aid supplies within the framework of respect for the national sovereignty of his country.

Maduro said he had a meeting with Peter Maurer, president of the ICRC and Sophie Orr, the ICRC's regional director for the Americas on Tuesday night at Miraflores Presidential Palace in Caracas.
