USA: House Republicans set to pass new asylum restrictions as Title 42 ends; Biden promises veto

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Republicans were on track Thursday to pass a sweeping bill to build more U.S.-Mexico border wall and impose new restrictions on asylum seekers, creating a hard-line counter to President Joe Biden’s policies just as migrants are amassing along the border with the end of coronavirus pandemic restrictions.

The bill has virtually no chance of becoming law. Democrats, who have a narrow hold on the Senate, have decried the aggressive measures in the bill as “cruel” and “anti-immigrant,” and Biden has already promised he would veto it.

S. Korea’s Export Fell 10.1 Percent In First 10 Days Of May

SEOUL, May 11 (NNN-YONHAP) – South Korea’s export fell in double digits, in the first 10 days of May, due to the continued weakness in global demand for locally-made products, customs office data showed today.

Export amounted to 14.48 billion U.S. dollars, during the May 1-10 period, down 10.1 percent from the same period of last year, according to Korea Customs Service.

MATAMOROS, Mexico (AP) — Migrants rushed across the Mexico border Thursday in hopes of entering the U.S. in the final hours before pandemic-related asylum restrictions are lifted — a change that many feared could make it more difficult for them to stay.

With a midnight deadline looming, migrants in Mexico shed clothing before descending a steep bank into the Rio Grande, clutching plastic bags filled with clothes. One man held a baby in an open suitcase on his head.

Turkish Airlines set to order 600 aircraft, chairman says

ISTANBUL, May 11 (Reuters) - Turkish Airlines (THY) (THYAO.IS) will order a total of 600 new aircraft in June and they will be delivered within ten years, company chairman Ahmet Bolat said on Thursday.

Italy: Van carrying oxygen tanks explodes in Milan; driver injured

MILAN (AP) — A van that was transporting oxygen tanks to a nearby medical facility exploded in the center of the Italian city of Milan on Thursday, forcing the evacuation of a school and residential apartment buildings. The driver suffered minor injuries.

Images on Sky TG24 show a plume of dark smoke rising from a narrow street near Porta Romana, where flames scorched nearby cars and motorcycles and exploded windows in adjacent buildings, including the school. Firefighters quickly brought the flames under control.

Iranian FM says Saudi Arabia appoints new envoy to Tehran

TEHRAN, May 11 (Xinhua) -- Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said on Thursday that Saudi Arabia has appointed its new ambassador to Tehran, according to the official IRNA news agency.

Amir-Abdollahian revealed that Riyadh had informed the Iranian government about the appointment of the new envoy on Tuesday. He also expressed Iran's commitment to reciprocate by soon appointing its ambassador to Saudi Arabia and introducing him to the Saudi government.

UAE ADNOC to offer 15% stake via public offer

Abu Dhabi oil giant, ADNOC, intends to offer 15 per cent of its shares in unit ADNOC Logistics & Services (ADNOC L&S) through an initial public offering (IPO) on the Abu Dhabi stock exchange, the company said on Wednesday, Reuters reports.

According to the report, ADNOC will offer about 1.1 million shares in its maritime logistics services unit, which is expected to list on 1 June, subject to market conditions, the statement said.
