USA: UN chief warns Israel must ‘abide by its obligations’ under international law

UNITED NATIONS, May 11 (APP):UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has voiced “deep concern” over the violence between Israel and Gaza militant groups, and warns the Jewish state must adhere to international law during the latest round of conflict.

In a statement released by his Spokesperson Farhan Haq , he said he condemned the civilian loss of life that occurred during Israeli airstrikes on Tuesday aimed at the Islamic Jihad group, three of whose leaders were killed.

USA: Marine veteran who fatally choked NYC subway rider Jordan Neely to surrender on manslaughter charge

NEW YORK (AP) — A man who kept a chokehold around the neck of an agitated fellow passenger on a New York City subway, leading to the other rider’s death, is expected to turn himself in to authorities Friday on a manslaughter charge that could send him to prison for 15 years.

Manhattan prosecutors announced Thursday they would bring the criminal charge against Daniel Penny, 24, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, in the May 1 death of 30-year-old Jordan Neely.

Iran says releases Irish national on "consular, humanitarian" grounds

TEHRAN, May 12 (Xinhua) -- The Iranian Embassy in Dublin said that an Irish national imprisoned in Iran has been pardoned and released on "consular and humanitarian" grounds.

The Iranian Embassy announced in a post on its Twitter page on Thursday evening the Irish national's release was a result of "constructive diplomatic engagement between Iran and Ireland," identifying the Irish citizen as Bernard Phelan.

Russia to continue efforts to punish those responsible for Nord Stream blasts

PETERSBURG, May 12. /TASS/: Russia will continue to use all available legal instruments to bring those behind the explosions at the Nord Stream gas pipelines to responsibility, but the likelihood of this happening at international court bodies is slim, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev said on Friday.

"Naturally, we will continue to use all available legal instruments to hold those responsible accountable but the chances of doing that at international court bodies are negligible," he said at the St. Petersburg International Legal Forum.

Ukrainian deminers get training in Cyprus from US, Irish experts

NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) — Cyprus is working together with Irish and U.S. military experts to help train two groups of Ukrainian personnel in clearing an untold number of unmarked minefields in their homeland, the island nation’s defense minister said Friday.

Minister Michalis Georgallas told the Associated Press Friday a first group of 24 Ukrainians was currently undergoing training in Cypriot military installations, with another group expected to arrive next month.

Israeli Military Instructed To Continue Striking Gaza Amid Violence Escalation

JERUSALEM, May 12 (NNN-MA’AN) – Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, said last night that, Israel’s military campaign in the Gaza Strip will “continue as long as necessary,” amid the worst spate of violence between Israel and the Palestinians in months.

Aviation leasing watchdog issues warning on India over plane repossessions

NEW DELHI, May 12 (Reuters) - India has been placed on a watchlist with a negative outlook by a global aviation leasing watchdog which said it had failed to comply with international aircraft repossession norms after airline Go First was granted bankruptcy protection.

The move by the Aviation Working Group (AWG), a UK-based entity that monitors leasing and financing laws on behalf of planemakers and lessors, could raise leasing costs for Indian airlines and further hurt lessors' confidence in the world's third-largest domestic aviation market.

Palestinian militants fire more rockets, Israeli airstrikes hit Gaza despite cease-fire efforts

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) — The most violent confrontation in months between Israel and Palestinian militants continued for a third straight day on Friday, as Israeli warplanes struck targets in the Gaza Strip and militants fired rockets toward Jerusalem and southern Israel.

There were no immediate reports of casualties on either side Friday, as foreign mediators pressed ahead with efforts to reach a cease-fire. The past few days of fighting have killed 31 Palestinians in Gaza and a 70-year-old man in central Israel.

Pakistani rupee recovers after touching historic low against USD

ISLAMABAD, May 12 (Xinhua) -- The Pakistani rupee has gained a strong recovery after touching a historic low against the U.S. dollar as the greenback was traded at 285.08 rupees in the interbank market on Friday, according to the State Bank of Pakistan.

The U.S. dollar closed at 298.93 rupees on Thursday. On the last working day of the week, the local currency appreciated by 13.85 rupees, or 4.86 percent, against the U.S. dollar, official figures showed.

Sudan resolution passes in UN Human Rights Council

11 May 2023; MEMO: The UN Human Rights Council adopted a resolution, Thursday, on the human rights impact of the conflict in Sudan, Anadolu News Agency reports.

Calling for an immediate cessation of violence with no pre-conditions by all parties in the fighting between the Army and a paramilitary group, the decision was passed with 18 votes in favour, 15 against, and 14 abstaining at the end of a special session on Sudan.

Switzerland: UEFA rebuts claim Istanbul in doubt as Champions League final host after election
