Kuwaiti govt resigns, possibly helping to end political standoff

KUWAIT, Nov 8 (Reuters) - Kuwait's government on Monday submitted its resignation to the ruling emir, a move which along with an amnesty pardoning political dissidents could help end a standoff with opposition lawmakers that has hindered fiscal reform.

The resignation, reported by state news agency KUNA, is the second this year by a government headed by Prime Minister Sheikh Sabah al-Khalid al-Sabah in the feud with the elected parliament of the Gulf OPEC producer.

Israel Report: NSO spyware found on 6 Palestinian activists’ phones

JERUSALEM (AP) — Security researchers disclosed Monday that spyware from the notorious Israeli hacker-for-hire company NSO Group was detected on the cellphones of six Palestinian human rights activists, half affiliated with groups that Israel’s defense minister controversially claimed were involved in terrorism.

The revelation marks the first known instance of Palestinian activists being targeted by the military-grade Pegasus spyware. Its use against journalists, rights activists and political dissidents from Mexico to Saudi Arabia has been documented since 2015.

Turkey, Syria regime deploy military to Aleppo

08 Nov 2021; MEMO:Turkey and the Syrian regime of President Bashar Al-Assad have recently deployed army reinforcements into the countryside of Aleppo, northern Syria, local media outlets reported.

According to reports, a Turkish convoy consisting of tanks, heavy artillery, personnel carriers and armoured vehicles entered the city of Al-Bab near Aleppo while army reinforcements have also been deployed to the Syrian-Turkish border opposite the city of Ayn Al-Arab (Kobani).

Five Czech parties sign deal to form government, oust Babis

PRAGUE, Nov 8 (Reuters) - The Czech Republic's prospective new centre-right prime minister promised rapid change on Monday, after reaching an agreement among a coalition of five parties to form a government and oust Prime Minister Andrej Babis following an election last month.

The parties - ranging from the mildly eurosceptic Civic Democrats to the progressive Pirate Party - pledged to cut budget deficits, which have spiralled since last year amid the pandemic and hikes in pensions and wages.

Amnesty slams settler playground attack on Palestinian children

08 Nov 2021; MEMO: Amnesty International has condemned an attack by Israeli settlers and soldiers against Palestinian children in a playground in the occupied West Bank village of Sussia near Hebron. The incident took place on Saturday, when Israeli soldiers prevented the children and their mothers from having access to the playground in their village.

The playground opened in September having been renovated. Repairs were made to eradicate safety issues.

India: Rahul Gandhi flays use of UAPA against journalists, activists in Tripura

New Delhi, Nov 8 (PTI) Former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi on Monday said truth cannot be silenced by booking people under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in Tripura.

He also attacked the BJP, saying its favourite cover-up tactic is "shooting the messenger ".

The reaction came after the police invoked UAPA against social media handles including those of journalists and activists over alleged clashes and attacks on mosques in Tripura.

UN reiterates support for upcoming elections in Libya

TRIPOLI, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- Assistant Secretary-General and Coordinator of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) Raisedon Zenenga on Sunday reiterated his support for the upcoming elections in Libya.

Zenenga made his remarks during a virtual consultation with a diverse group of civil society representatives from all parts of Libya.

"Participants shared their views on elections, with a common message that the goal for the elections should be to deliver stability and to enable the country to go out of recurrent political crises," the UNSMIL said in a post on Twitter.

Arab League holds talks in Lebanon over Gulf row

BEIRUT, Nov 8 (Reuters) - A senior Arab League official held talks in Lebanon on Monday in a bid to ease a rift with Saudi Arabia over criticism of its role in the Yemen war, saying the crisis could have been defused if the minister who made the comments had resigned.

Arab League Assistant Secretary General Hossam Zaki met Lebanon's president, prime minister and parliament speaker during his visit. President Michel Aoun said he welcomed any Arab League initiative to restore ties with Saudi Arabia.
