CEO of news channel arrested in extortion case

Ghaziabad/Dehradun, Oct 29 (PTI) The Editor-in-Chief and CEO of a news channel in Uttarakhand was arrested from his Ghaziabad residence on Sunday for allegedly putting pressure on one of his employees to do a sting operation on prominent politicians including the state chief minister with an intent to blackmail them, police said.

Samachar Plus CEO Umesh Kumar Sharma was arrested from his Ghaziabad residence after raids were conducted at his office in Noida and residence in Ghaziabad, ADG (law and order) Ashok Kumar said.

India: Man commits suicide in police station premises

Banda (UP), Oct 28 (PTI) A 37-year-old man allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in Tindwari Police Station premises here, police said Sunday.

Bablu Singh went inside a room in the police station premises on Saturday night and hanged himself from the ceiling, police official Bharat Lal Kumar Pal said.

Singh and others were called at the police station on a complaint of power theft.

The victim's father Ram Asrey Singh alleged that his son was harassed in the police station due to which he died.

Dengue patients increasing

KANPUR: There is a clear indication of rising in the dengue patients. Out of 157 samples tested in the medical college microbiology laboratory, as many as 63 cases were identified positively. Thus, the figure of dengue patients has reached beyond the number of 500.

This was a quite distressing situation in view of the effective drive launched to minimise the larvae through spraying in the changing season by the Health Department here.   

India: Cattle trader killed in Muzaffarnagar

Muzaffarnagar (UP) Oct 27 (PTI) A cattle trader was shot dead and robbed of Rs 1,50,000 near Sikheda village here Saturday, police said.

The deceased was identified as Akhlak. He was returning to his home in Mansurpur village from a cattle mela in Bihari village when the incident took place, police said.

According to City SP Ombir Singh, two armed men intercepted Akhlak's e-rickshaw, shot him and robbed Rs 1,50,000 cash from a case in the vehicle.

Tanneries served notices with fine

KANPUR: The National Green Tribunal has slapped a penalty on as many as 21 tanneries in violation of its defined standards.

Earlier, Indian Institute of Technology & Banaras Hindu University team inspected the tanneries on May 31 this year. There was noticed more than enough chromium in outlet flow of the common treatment effluent plant at that time. The notice remained ineffectual as the tannery owners did not respond.  

Old licenses for firecrackers' sale to be renewed

KANPUR: An important decision in regard to the sale of firecrackers on approaching Diwali has been considered. Fresh license for sale of the firecrackers will not be issued. The past year's provisional licenses will get a renewal this year

The ADM (City) Vivek Srivastava said that as many as 375 applicants were provided with provisional licenses last year which will be renewed.

India: 70-yr-old woman raped by relative: Police

Shahjahanpur (UP), Oct 24 (PTI) A 70-year-old woman was allegedly raped by a distant relative here, police said Wednesday.

A first information report (FIR) was lodged Tuesday on the basis of a complaint from the woman, they added.

The woman, a resident of Rampur, had come to Dhakiya Ranvas village under the Sidhauli police station and was allegedly raped by a distant relative here on September 28, station in-charge Birja Ram said.

City remains most polluted

KANPUR:  In a sample collected from a survey of as many as 60 cities in the country, the city remained at the most polluted level in the country on Tuesday.

There was found sixfold increase in its normal 2.5 pm level. The air quality index level was also worse, according to the Central Pollution Control Board.
