KANPUR: The National Green Tribunal has slapped a penalty on as many as 21 tanneries in violation of its defined standards.
Earlier, Indian Institute of Technology & Banaras Hindu University team inspected the tanneries on May 31 this year. There was noticed more than enough chromium in outlet flow of the common treatment effluent plant at that time. The notice remained ineffectual as the tannery owners did not respond.
The tannery owners, however, complained of improper functioning of motor fitted into the CTEP. They demanded its replacement.
Besides, they also raised demand for closure of Satti Chura, Dabka and Gola Ghat Nallahs.
Seeking report on Nullah cleaning and silt removal from the Municipal Commissioner SK Sharma, the NGT directed Committee president found in the inspection that solid waste was still falling into the Ganges. This clearly showed that the there was laxity in a cleaning of the Nullahs.
Committee president Arun Tandon, a retired judge, in a meeting held at Circuit House here, asked the district officials to impose a fine of Rs one lac on tanneries against violation of the rules. He also added that the tannery owners should not be served compliance notices of 20 days but only of three days.
Inspecting the poor condition of the Bakar Mandi pumping station, the Ganga Pollution Vigilance Committee members asked whether one safai worker was engaged in cleaning the stuffed Nullah.
