India: Ker CM writes to PM on Karna blocking key state highway

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 28 (PTI): Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has drawn the attention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the action of Karnataka police in blocking a key state highway ferrying essential commodites to the state and urged him to immediately intervene in the matter

In a letter to Modi, the Chief Minister pointed out that the Thalassery-Coorg State Highway 30, connecting Kerala with Coorg in Karnataka via Veerajapetta, was a key highway on which cargo lorries ferry essential commodites to Kerala.

India: Kerala reports first COVID-19 death

Kochi, Mar 28 (PTI) Kerala reported its first COVID-19 death on Saturday after a 69-year-old man being treated for the virus died at Ernakulam Medical College Hospital.

The man, hailing from Ernakulam, was admitted to the isolation ward on March 22 after his return from Dubai, the government hospital said in a statement.

India: Maha corona tally now 160 as seven more test positive

Mumbai/Nagpur, Mar 28 (PTI) With seven more persons testing positive for coronavirus in Maharashtra, the total number of such cases in the state has gone up to 160, officials said on Saturday.

Of these seven new COVID-19 patients, five are from Mumbai and two from Nagpur, health department officials said.

On Friday, 28 persons were found infected with coronavirus in different parts of the state, they said.

In Nagpur, both the new patients, including a girl, are close contacts of the person, who had tested positive on Thursday, the district officials said.

India: Indira Canteens to provide free food to poor and needy

Bengaluru, Mar 28 (PTI) The Karnataka government on Saturday said that the state run Indira Canteens would provide food packets free of cost to the poor and needy in the wake of the lockdown, the government said here on Saturday.

The canteens would operate in three schedules -from 7:30 AM to 10 AM, 12:30 PM to 3 PM and 7:30 PM to 9 PM, the government said in a public announcement

India: Delhi govt starts distributing ration for next month

New Delhi, Mar 28 (PTI) Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Saturday said the city government has started distributing ration for the next month in the wake of the 21-day lockdown.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had announced last week that those receiving ration from fair-price shops would get 50 per cent extra for the next month.

India: Football club Mohun Bagan donate Rs 20 lakh for fight against COVID-19

Kolkata, Mar 28 (PTI) Designated I-League champions Mohun Bagan have announced a donoation of Rs 20 lakh in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.

"Mohun Bagan will donate Rs 20 lakh towards the West Bengal State Emergency Relief Fund to be used to combat the deadly coronavirus pandemic," Mohun Bagan announced this on their official Facebook page.

Indian authorities send buses to take unemployed to villages

NEW DELHI (AP) — Authorities sent a fleet of buses to the outskirts of India’s capital on Saturday to meet an exodus of migrant workers desperately trying to reach their home villages during the world’s largest coronavirus lockdown.

Thousands of people, mostly young male day laborers but also families, fled their New Delhi homes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a 21-day lockdown that began on Wednesday and effectively put millions of Indians who live off daily earnings out of work.
