India: Justice Rafiq takes oath as CJ of Orissa High Court

Bhubaneswar, April 27 (PTI) Justice Mohammad Rafiq was on Monday sworn in as the 31st Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court.

Odisha Governor Ganeshi Lal administered the oath of office and secrecy to him at Lok Seva Bhawan here, in the presence of Chief Secretary Asit Kumar Tripathy, Law Minister Pratap Jena, Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Pradipta Kumar Naik and senior officials of the high court among others.

Official sources said social distancing guidelines laid down by the government were strictly adhered to during the brief ceremony.

India: Retired army Major booked for posting fake news

Hyderabad, Apr 27 (PTI) A retired Major of the Army was on Monday booked by the Cyberabad Police here for allegedly posting fake news on a social media platform, police said.

The Cyber Crime Police noticed that Twitter account holder "theskindoctor13" created a fake news article by editing an old news report in an English daily as 'Cyberabad Police Bans sale of Oranges in the City', an official release said.

India: Mumbai Police cops aged above 55 asked to go on leave

Mumbai, Apr 28 (PTI) Mumbai Police have asked their personnel who are above 55 years of age and having some pre- existing ailment to go on leave, in a bid to protect them from the coronavirus infection.

The move comes after COVID-19 claimed lives of three Mumbai Police personnel in the last three days.

During an analysis, it came to light that the three deceased and the other police personnel currently undergoing treatment for coronavirus disease were above the age of 50, a senior Mumbai Police official said on Tuesday.

India Mulls Extension Of Lock-down Amid COVID-19 Spread

NEW DELHI, April 28 (NNN-PTI) – Discussions are underway in India, regarding whether to extend the 40-day lock-down, imposed to fight COVID-19, and slated to end on May 3.

Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, yesterday held a video conference with chief ministers of states, and received feedback on the matter.

The lock-down has so far yielded positive results, as the country managed to save thousands of lives in the past one-and-a-half months, said Modi, during the conference.

India: Centre making conflicting statements on lockdown: Mamata

Kolkata, Apr 27 (PTI) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday alleged that the Centre was making contradictory statements on enforcement of the lockdown, and wanted greater clarity on the recent union home ministry order on reopening shops.

Claiming that many states were not allowed to speak during prime minister Narendra Modi's video conference with chief ministers owing to the rotation system, Banerjee said given a chance she would have raised several questions, including the need to send central teams to Bengal.

India: Ten Indonesian Tablighis arrested in Mumbai

Mumbai, Apr 27 (PTI) Ten Indonesians, including six women- who all are members of the Tablighi Jamaat and had attended the religious meet at the Nizamuddin Markaz in Delhi in March- have been arrested by the Mumbai Police under various sections of the IPC on completion of their quarantine period, an official said on Monday.

These ten members were part of a group of 12 Tablighis from Indonesia who were staying at an apartment in Bandra (west) since March 29 after they had returned from Delhi, he said.

India: 11-year-old boy completes his first fast of Ramazan

KANPUR: Where there is a will, there is a way. This is applicable on an 11-year-old boy Mohd Saad Hasan who completed his first fast (Roza) on the third day of Ramazan.

Only 25 Kg in weight he has a lean body. His weakness didn't hamper him from the observance of the fast. He was willing to keep the fast and he did it with his strong will. Though he complained of a slight headache, he did not lose his spirit. 

Not only he completed his fast but also read the Quran. He did not fail to offer prayers.

India: 'This institution is not hostage of government ', says SC

New Delhi, Apr 27 (PTI) This institution is not hostage of government, the Supreme Court said on Monday as it sought reply from the Centre on a plea seeking direction to authorities to allow migrant workers across the country to return home after conducting coronavirus tests.

The top court's remark came after advocate Prashant Bhushan told the court that the government's view is being blindly considered without verifying it, while fundamental rights of people especially migrant workers are not being enforced.
