Delhi riots: Court grants bail to accused

New Delhi, Jul 23 (PTI) A Delhi court Thursday granted bail to an accused in a case related to communal violence in north east Delhi in February, saying that the police failed to give any satisfactory reply to what evidence has been found against him.

Additional Sessions Judge Vinod Yadav granted the relief to Vinod Kumar on furnishing a bail bond of Rs 20,000 with one surety of like amount.

India: 120 inmates at UP's Jhansi prison test COVID-19 positive

Jhansi, Jul 23 (PTI) As many as 120 inmates of district jail here have tested positive for COVID-19, officials said on Thursday.

The Jhansi district administration on Wednesday said that according to a report, 134 people have tested positive for COVID-19 of which 120 are inmates of the district jail.

India: Three-year-old girl raped, killed in MP

Chhindwara (MP), Jul 23 (PTI) A three-year-old girl was allegedly raped and killed by two men at Chhindwara in Madhya Pradesh, the police said on Thursday.

Both the accused have been arrested.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan directed the police to fast-track the trial in the case and ensure that the accused get death sentence, said an official release.

The girl was playing outside her house on July 17 when she was abducted, said additional superintendent of police Shashank Garg.

India: BJP workers gherao BEST general manager in Mumbai

Mumbai, July 23 (PTI) A group of BJP workers gheraoed the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport's (BEST) general manager for nearly four hours at his office on Thursday seeking suspension of the increased power tariff in the city.

BJP workers led by city unit chief Mangalprabhat Lodha gheraoed general manager Surendrakumar Bagde at his office at BEST headquarters in south Mumbai, officials said.

BEST sources said that Bagde did not give any assurance, and managed to slip out finally through his private secretary'soffice.

India: Over 44 pc inmates in Guwahati jail test COVID-positive

Guwahati, Jul 23 (PTI) Over 44 per cent of the 984 prisoners in the Guwahati Central Jail, including peasant leader Akhil Gogoi and student activist Sharjeel Imam, have tested positive for COVID-19, a senior official said on Thursday.

The Gauhati High Court has ordered the Assam government to provide the best treatment to prisoners who have tested positive for COVID-19 after suo motu cognisance of the rising number of cases inside the jails.

India: Teen molested, uncle beaten up

Muzaffarnagar (UP), Jul 24 (PTI) A 16-year-old girl was allegedly sexually harassed in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar district by three men, who also beat up her uncle when he opposed them, police said on Friday.

The incident occurred at Bhokarhedi area on Thursday. The girl's uncle was beaten up with sticks and he has been admitted to a hospital in a serious condition, Bhopa police station incharge Sanjiv Kumar said.

India: Terrorist Vikas Dubey's slain aide Kartikey was not minor: Police

Kanpur (UP), Jul 24 (PTI) The Uttar Pradesh police has said gangster Vikas Dubey's close aide Prabhat Mishra alias Kartikey, who was killed as he attempted to flee from police custody while being taken to Kanpur from Faridabad, was not a minor, as claimed by his family.

The police claimed on Thursday that Kartikey forged his Class 8 transfer certificate and showed his age lower by four years. With the help of the fake document, he took admission in another school and graduated from high school in 2018, they said.

India: Vistara receives its first Airbus A321neo aircraft

New Delhi, Jul 24 (PTI) Vistara said on Friday it had received its first A321neo aircraft, which has 188 seats in three-class cabin configuration, from Airbus' Hamburg production facility.

The A321neo is a narrow-body aircraft that can be used on short to medium-haul international routes that are within seven hours of flying time.

India: Rajasthan HC order status quo on speaker's notices

Jaipur, Jul 24 (PTI) The Rajasthan High Court on Friday ordered maintaining status quo on disqualification notices issued by the assembly speaker to 19 dissident Congress MLAs, including Sachin Pilot.

The notices were served by the assembly speaker to the MLAs on July 14 after the party complained to him that the legislators had defied a whip to attend two Congress Legislature Party meetings last week.

The Congress had sought action against Pilot and the other dissidents under paragraph 2 (1) (a) of the 10th Schedule of the Constitution.

India: Babri demolition case: L K Advani deposes via video link

Lucknow, Jul 24 (PTI) Veteran BJP leader L K Advani on Friday recorded his statement before a special CBI court in the Babri mosque demolition case.

The statement of the 92-year-old former deputy prime minster was recorded through video conferencing in the court of special Judge SK Yadav in the presence of his counsel Vimal Kumar Srivastava, KK Mishra and Abhishek Ranjan, who were present in the court.

CBI lawyers Lalit Singh, P Chakravarti and RK Yadav were also present.
