India: Four men sentenced to 20 years RI in gangrape case

Nagpur, Oct 8 (PTI) A sessions court has sentenced four men to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment and fined them Rs 55,000 each for raping a woman in Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra.

District sessions judge R N Mehere on Wednesday convicted Nikhil Mandal (26), Rajesh Dakva (30), Mahadev Barai (28) and Swarup Mistry (35) under section 376 (rape) and other relevant provisions of the IPC, a release issued by Gadchiroli police stated.

India: Yoga enthusiast from US raped in Rishikesh

Rishikesh, Oct 8 (PTI) A 37-year-old yoga enthusiast from the US was allegedly raped here several times by a local resident, police said on Thursday.

As per the case registered by the victim, Rishikesh resident Abhinav Roy sneaked into her room through her balcony and raped her on October 5, Muni ki Reti police station in-charge R K Saklani said.

The woman complained that pressure was being mounted on her by the father of the accused to withdraw the case, said police.

India: RBI keeps policy rate unchanged at 4%

Mumbai, Oct 9 (PTI) Maintaining status quo for the second time in a row, Reserve Bank of India on Friday decided to keep benchmark interest rate unchanged at 4 per cent but maintained an accommodative stance, implying more rate cuts in the future if the need arises to support the economy hit by the COVID-19 crisis.

The benchmark repurchase (repo) rate has been left unchanged at 4 per cent, Governor Shaktikanta Das said while announcing the decisions taken by the central bank's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC).

India: RBI expects GDP to contract 9.5 % in current fiscal, economy contracted 23.9%

Mumbai, Oct 9 (PTI) The Reserve Bank expects the GDP to contract by 9.5 per cent in the current financial year due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on domestic as well as global economies.

Unveiling the bi-monthly monetary policy statement, RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das said that GDP was likely to turn positive at 0.5 per cent in the January-March quarter of the current financial year.

India: 20-yr-old Dalit woman gang-raped in UP's Fatehpur

Fatehpur (UP), Oct 9 (PTI) A Dalit woman was allegedly gang-raped in a village in Lilauli area here, police said on Friday.

"A 20-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped by two people in a village in Lilauli area on Thursday evening when she was returning home after attending nature's call," Additional Superintendent of Police, Rajesh Kumar said.

Acting on the victim's complaint, an FIR was registered against the accused -- Aman Yadav (25) and Guddu Yadav (24) and they have been arrested.

India: People rush to cull petrol as tanker turns upside down

Kanpur: There was a competition to rob petrol flowing freely from a damaged tanker capsized on the highway near Barra on Friday morning.

The police used mild force to quell them away. The driver and the helper got injured badly. Both were sent to the Hallet hospital.

According to the reports, a tanker was coming from the filling station at Bhauti. Suddenly the tanker near Barra bypass elevated highway lost its control and hit a truck. Ultimately it banged with the bridge safety wall. As a result, the tanker turned upside down.

Indian Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan Dies after heart surgery

Delhi; 09 Oct 2020 (UMMN): Ram Vilas Paswan, the consumer affairs minister in PM Narendra Modi's cabinet and the founder of the Lok Janshakti Party has died days after his heart surgery. He was 74.

Paswan is the 2nd union minister to die in the space of two months - Suresh Angadi died of coronavirus in September.

24 Universities Declared As Fake In India

NEW DELHI, Oct 8 (NNN-UNI) – India’s University Grants Commission (UGC) declared, as many as 24 universities as fake, said an official.

The UGC said that these “self-styled” unrecognised institutions are not empowered to confer any degrees to the students.

A maximum of eight institutions were declared as fake in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, followed by seven in Delhi, two each in eastern states of West Bengal and Odisha, and one each in Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Puducherry and Andhra Pradesh.

Indian economy to shrink 9.6 pct due to COVID-19, says World Bank

NEW DELHI, Oct 8 (NNN-BERNAMA) — India’s economy is expected to shrink by 9.6 per cent in its current financial year due to the coronavirus pandemic, the World Bank said.

The forecast reflects the impact from the national lockdown to contain the COVID-19 spread and the ensuing income shock experienced by households and businesses.
