India: 2 held for raping, molesting Mumbai-based event manager

New Delhi, Nov 23 (PTI) Two men have been arrested for allegedly raping and molesting a 28-year-old Mumbai-based freelance event manager in Delhi's Aerocity area, police said on Monday.

They have been identified as Sandeep Mehta (57) and Naveen Dawar (47), both eatery owners in Haryana's Sonipat, they said.

Kolkata, Nov 22 (PTI) In a fresh war of words, TMC strongman Anubrata Mondal described BJP as the "biggest virus in Bengal", and the saffron partys state chief Dilip Ghosh retarded, saying that the ruling party's days are numbered.

At a programme on Saturday, the Birbhum chief of the TMC invited Ghosh to "meet my booth-level workers" and subsequently join the ruling party, to which the BJP leader said that he would ensure Mondal's "fury" remains under check.

New Delhi, Nov 22 (PTI) The BJP on Sunday termed 'love jihad' a "serious problem" and backed the decision of its state governments to enact laws against it.

BJP-ruled states like Uttar Pradesh and Haryana have expressed their intention to bring a law against 'love jihad', a term coined by Hindutva groups for Hindu girls being allegedly forced to convert to Islam in the guise of marriage.

Opposition parties have dismissed this as an attempt by the BJP to divide the society and said any such law will be violative of the Constitution.

India: Man gets 10-year jail for rape in UP

Banda (UP), Nov 22 (PTI) A court here sentenced a man to 10-year imprisonment in a rape case and also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on him.

Special Public Prosecutor Ramsuphal Singh said Special Judge Mohammad Rizwan Ahmad gave the judgment on Saturday.

The 15-year-old girl was raped on November 1, 2016 by Chandan Rajput (26), the son of her landlord, Singh said, adding that she lived with her mother at the rented accommodation.

On the day of the incident, Chandan called the girl to get 'gutkha' and raped her, he said.

India: AAP organises free-mask distribution campaign

New Delhi, Nov 22 (PTI) The Aam Aadmi Party legislators and councillors distributed free masks across Delhi on Sunday as part of its awareness campaign against the novel coronavirus following the appeal of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

The MLAs, including Saurabh Bharadwaj, Imran Hussain and Somnath Bharti, and councillors went to the markets in their respective areas to distribute masks to those who were not wearing any, the AAP said.

India: TNCC chief among scores of Congress workers detained for protesting new farm laws

Coimbatore, Nov 22 (PTI): TNCC president K S Alagiri was among the scores of Congress workers detained near here on Sunday when they tried to take out a procession carrying ploughs to condemn the new farm laws brought in by the Centre.

Since there was no permission to take out the procession, the police prevented the workers, led by Alagiri, from proceeding leading to the detention.

After an hour, they were released, police said.
