BHAINSWAL, India (Reuters) - Thousands of farmers in a politically important Indian state on Friday rallied in opposition to new agricultural laws, signalling growing support for a months-long campaign to have the government reforms scrapped.

Angry at what they see as legislation that benefits private buyers at the expense of growers, tens of thousands of farmers have been camped on the outskirts of the capital, New Delhi, for more than two months, calling for the withdrawal of laws introduced in September.

New Delhi, Feb 5 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Friday granted interim bail to comedian Munawar Faruqui in a case lodged at Indore in Madhya Pradesh for allegedly hurting religious sentiments.

A bench headed by Justice R F Nariman also issued a notice to the Madhya Pradesh Government on Munawar's plea challenging the high court order refusing to grant regular bail to him.

India: FIR against dead farmers' family in UP for 'insulting' national flag

Pilibhit (UP), Feb 5 (PTI) The mother and brother of a farmer, who died in a road accident near the Ghazipur protest site, have been booked along with another person for allegedly insulting the national flag after a video of his last rites here showed the body draped in the Tricolour, police said Friday.

According to the flag code of India, draping the Tricolour in a civilian funeral is an offence.

India: BJP MLA booked for rape in Rajasthan

Udaipur, Feb 5 (PTI) A BJP MLA in Rajasthan's Udaipur has been booked for allegedly raping a woman on the pretext of marriage.

The FIR against Gogunda MLA Pratap Lal Bheel (52) was registered at Sukher Police Station on Thursday.

The medical examination of the victim, who is aged around 35 years, was conducted and statements were recorded yesterday (Thursday), SP Udaipur Rajeev Pachar said.

The case was referred to the CID for investigation, he added.

India: UP police books ex-AMU student for sedition'

Lucknow Feb 4 (PTI) A day after having been booked by the Maharastra police for allegedly hurting religious sentiments of people with his remarks at Elgar Parishad conclave in Pune, former AMU student Sharjeel Usmani was slapped with the charge of sedition by Lucknow police.

The case against Usmani was lodged at the Hazratganj police station in Lucknow on Wednesday night on the complaint of a city resident Anurag Singh, police said on Thursday.

Closely monitoring developments in Myanmar: India

New Delhi, Feb 4 (PTI) Days after Myanmar's powerful military seized power in a coup, India on Thursday said it was "closely" monitoring developments in the neighbouring country.

"India and Myanmar are neighbours with close cultural and people-to-people ties, bolstered by trade, economic, security and defence related exchanges. We are, therefore, monitoring developments in that country closely," external affairs ministry spokesperson Anurag Srivastava said.
