India: Cong committed to correct BJP's governance of division, distortion, deceit

Guwahati, Apr 3 (PTI) Senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid Saturday said his party is committed to correct BJP's governance of division, distortion and deceit if voted to power in Assam.

Addressing a press conference here, the former union minister alleged that the saffron party has throughout its poll campaign attempted to destroy tenets of democracy and Assamese identity.

"The BJP believes in division, distortion and deceit.

Five years of its rule in Assam has put a stamp on this," he said.

India: Bodies of 17 jawans recovered at encounter site in Chhattisgarh

Raipur, Apr 3 (PTI) Bodies of 17 of the 18 jawans missing after an encounter with Naxals in Chhattisgarh have been recovered from the site of the skirmish, police said on Sunday.

The number of security personnel killed in the encounter has gone up to 22, police said.

Eighteen jawans were missing after five security personnel were killed and 30 others injured on Saturday in the encounter with Naxals in a forest along the border between Bijapur and Sukma districts in Chhattisgarh, police said.

India: Local BJP leader shot dead in UP's Gorakhpur

Gorakhpur, Apr 3 (PTI) A 52-year-old local BJP leader, a contestant in the panchayat elections in Narayanpur in Uttar Pradesh, was shot dead while he was returning home after attending a public meeting, police said on Saturday.

Three people were detained following the killing of Brijesh Singh on Friday night in the Moglaha area. The fourth accused is at large, they said.

Singh was shot around 11 pm and was rushed to the BRD Medical College, where doctors declared him dead, police said.

India: UP man booked on rape charges in Hoshiarpur

Hoshiarpur, Apr 2 (PTI) A migrant worker was booked for allegedly raping a 15-year-old girl at a brick kiln falling under the Chabbewal police station area in Punjab's Hoshiarpur district, police said on Friday.

Quoting the victim's father complaint, police said Vikas, a native of Uttar Pradesh, had allegedly made physical relations with his daughter about nine months ago on the pretext of marrying her.

India, France and Australia to hold trilateral talks

New Delhi, Apr 2 (PTI) The foreign ministers of India, France and Australia are expected to hold a trilateral meeting on April 13 with a focus on boosting cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region, people familiar with the development said on Friday.

The meeting is set to focus on exploring practical cooperation in other crucial areas such as dealing with the adverse impact of the coronavirus pandemic, they added.

India: Three detained on gang-rape charge in UP

Shahjahanpur (UP), Apr 3 (PTI) Three men have been detained in connection with the alleged gang rape of a 25-year-old woman in this district, police said on Saturday.

The alleged gang-rape took place on March 22 in a village under Mirzapur police station limits, they said.

Jalalabad Circle Officer (CO) Massa Singh said the woman was abducted by the three men when she had gone to the roof of her house to speak to her husband over the phone.

India: Amit Shah holds road show in Chennai

Chennai, Apr 3 (PTI) Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday held a road show here, canvassing votes for BJP's Thousand Lights candidate Khushbu Sundar for the April 6 Assembly elections.

The BJP veteran travelled atop an open van with Sundar and AIADMK candidates from nearby constituencies at the well- attended roadshow.

Amid chants of 'Bharat Mata ki jai' and fluttering flags of alliance parties being carried by the respective outfits, Shah attended the road show in the last leg of the campaign, which ends tomorrow, here.

India: Highways construction touches record 37 km per day: Gadkari

New Delhi, Apr 2 (PTI) Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has said that the pace of highways construction in the country has touched a record 37 km per day in financial year 2020-21.

He said the achievement was remarkable as it was achieved despite constraints posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The ministry of road transport and highways has constructed 13,394 km of highways in fiscal year 2020-21.

India: Mamata hits back at Modi over second seat contest dig

Dinhata (WB), Apr 2 (PTI) Asserting that she was winning the election from Nandigram, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday hit back at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said that she does not need his "suggestion" on contesting from any other seat.

The prime minister had on Thursday asked Banerjee to clarify whether there is truth in the "rumours" that she was going to file the nomination for another seat going to the polls in the last phase, maintaining that the TMC chief has admitted defeat in Nandigram.
