Indian Covishield vaccine not approved in EU, Poonawalla hopes issue be resolved

New Delhi, Jun 28 (PTI) Vaccine major Serum Institute of India chief executive officer Adar Poonawalla on Monday said he has taken up the issues faced by Indians who have taken the Covishield jab travelling to the European Union at highest levels and hoped to resolve them soon.

Covishield is the Oxford University-AstraZeneca vaccine manufactured in India by the Pune-based vaccine maker.

Indian Govt hands over probe into Jammu airport drone attack to NIA

New Delhi, Jun 29 (PTI) The government on Tuesday handed over the probe into the drone attack on the Jammu air force station to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

Explosives were dropped on the Indian Air Force station in Jammu by two drones in the early hours of Sunday, injuring two personnel.

The investigation into the attack on the Jammu air force station has been handed over to the NIA, a Home Ministry spokesperson said.

India: Answer to crisis is to put money in hands of people: Chidambaram

New Delhi, Jun 29 (PTI) A day after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced a package to support the pandemic-hit economy, senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Tuesday said the answer to this "crisis" is to spur demand by putting money in the hands of the people, especially the poor and the lower middle classes.

India: Cop arrested, suspended for raping friend's wife in UP

Firozabad (UP), Jun 28 (PTI) A policeman was on Monday arrested and later suspended for allegedly raping his friend's wife in Khairgarh area here, police said.

Manoj Kumar, posted in emergency helpline 112 service, allegedly took the woman to a secluded place on Sunday with the help of her husband and raped her, Senior Superintendent of Police Ashok Kumar said.

On the basis of the complaint filed by the woman, an FIR has been registered and a probe is underway, he added.

India: Deputy EC Umesh Sinha gets one-year extension

New Delhi, Jun 28 (PTI) The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet gave a one-year extension to Deputy Election Commissioner Umesh Sinha on Monday.

Sinha is a former Uttar Pradesh-cadre IAS officer.

As the seniormost deputy election commissioner, he is heading various committees in the Election Commission dealing with different subjects.

Sinha has been given an extension till June 30, 2022, a notification said.

India: Bengal Governor corrupt, should be removed: Mamata

Kolkata, Jun 28 (PTI) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Monday called Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar a "corrupt man" and questioned the purpose of his recent tour of North Bengal, alleging that a conspiracy was being hatched to divide the northern part of the state.

Banerjee also said she has written multiple letters to the Centre, seeking Dhankhar's removal.

India: 2 youths arrested for gang-raping 14-yr-old girl in UP

Fatehpur (UP), Jun 28 (PTI) Two youths were arrested on Monday in connection with the alleged gang-rape of a 14-year-old girl in Ghazipur police station area of the district, police said.

Station House Officer Arjun Singh said the girl was gang-raped in a village here on Friday and a case was registered against the accused on Saturday.

He said medical examination of the girl had confirmed rape.

India: SC orders ration scheme till July 31, provide free ration till COVID situation

New Delhi, Jun 29 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed states and union territories to implement the 'one nation, one ration card scheme' till July 31, while asking the Centre to provide dry ration for free distribution among migrant workers till the COVID-19 situation continues.

India: Woman raped in UP village

Sambhal (UP), Jun 29 (PTI) A 19-year-old woman was allegedly raped in a village in this district when she had gone to a forest to collect fodder, police said on Tuesday.

The alleged incident took place on June 26 and the accused also recorded the act and circulated the video on social media, they said.

A complaint regarding the incident was lodged by the woman's father.

India: Women police stations to come up in all districts of MP

Bhopal, Jun 29 (PTI) The Madhya Pradesh government has issued a notification to set up a women police station each in all districts of the state to curb crime against women and ensure speedy justice in such cases, state Home Minister Narottam Mishra said on Tuesday.

While 10 districts of the state already have such police stations, now a gazette notification has been issued to start the facility in the remaining 42 districts, the minister told reporters.
