India: Man held for raping elderly woman in Rajasthan

Kota (Raj), Oct 24 (PTI) A 22-year-old man was arrested on Sunday by Jhalawar police for allegedly raping an elderly woman, police said.

According to police, the 63-year-old woman was on the way to her house on Jaitakhedi road on Saturday when the accused forcibly took her to a nearby deserted field and raped her, and later fled the place.

A complaint was filed by the woman at the Pedawa Police Station against Ranga alias Durgalal Dholi following which an FIR was registered, Ramnarayan, SHO, Padawa police station said.

Patna, Oct 24 (PTI) Weathered by old age and ill-health, RJD president Lalu Prasad on Sunday returned to his home turf of Bihar from where imprisonment in fodder scam cases had kept him away for three years.

Prasad, who was released from jail a few months ago, arrived here accompanied by wife Rabri Devi and eldest daughter Misa Bharti, at whose Delhi residence he had been putting up for medical help he needs for the multiple ailments he suffers from.

India: Tripura's Karbong tribe facing extinction: Experts

By Jayanta Bhattacharya Agartala, Oct 25 (PTI) The Karbong, a sub-tribe of Tripura's Halam community, whose leaders were once among specially invited guests at the erstwhile kingdom's royal palace, are now on the verge of extinction, experts said on Monday.

A mere 250-odd people belonging to the tribe now live in West Tripura and Dhalai districts, they said.

Indian Rupee settles 18 paise lower at 75.08 against US dollar

Mumbai, Oct 25 (PTI) The rupee ended 18 paise lower at 75.08 (provisional) against the US currency on Monday due to a spike in crude oil prices and a stronger greenback against key rivals overseas.

At the interbank forex market, the local unit opened on a weak note at 74.98 and witnessed an intra-day high of 74.97 and a low of 75.10 against the American currency during day trade.

India: Union Health Ministry sends high-level team to study Zika in Kanpur

Kanpur: A 57-year-old man from Kanpur had tested positive for the virus on October 22.

The Union Health Ministry on Monday sent a high-level multi-disciplinary team to Uttar Pradesh where a Zika virus case was reported in Kanpur.

The multi-disciplinary team comprising an entomologist, public health specialists and a gynaecologist has been sent to take stock of the ground situation and follow containment measures.

India’s Life Expectancy Drops By Two Years Due To COVID-19

MUMBAI, Oct 24 (NNN-PTI) – Life expectancy of Indians dropped by close to two years, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as per statistical analysis, published by a Mumbai-based state-run institution, yesterday.

“The life expectancy at birth in 2019 was 69.5 years for men and 72 years for women, which came down to 67.5 years and 69.8 years, respectively, in 2020,” said the study, published in the health journal by Mumbai’s civic body.

New Delhi, Oct 22 (PTI) The Samyukt Kisan Morcha has decided to postponed its October 26 Kisan Mahapanchayat in Lucknow due to adverse weather conditions and the ongoing harvest season.

After the Lakhimpur Kheri incident in which eight people, including four farmers, were killed, the SKM announced a Kisan Mahapanchayat to be organised in Lucknow on October 26.

India: UP govt to rename Faizabad railway station to Ayodhya Cantt

Lucknow, Oct 23 (PTI) The Uttar Pradesh government has decided to rename the Faizabad railway station, a tweet by the office of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said on Saturday.

It will be called the Ayodhya Cantt railway station, the tweet said, adding that the decision was taken by the chief minister.

In another tweet, the CM's office said the Centre too has granted its consent to the decision and Adityanath has given green signal to issue a notification in this regard.
