India: SC decision in Unnao case stamp on "jungle raj" in UP: Priyanka

New Delhi, Aug 2 (PTI) Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Friday said the Supreme Court's ruling in the Unnao rape case is a "stamp" on the prevailing "jungle raj" in Uttar Pradesh and the state government's failure.

The Supreme Court on Thursday issued a slew of instructions in the case, including directing the transfer of all five cases registered in connection with the Unnao rape incident from a court in Uttar Pradesh to a court in the national capital.

India: Nine-year-old girl raped; accused absconding

Palghar, Aug1 (PTI) A nine-year-old girl was allegedly raped by an unidentified person near here in Maharashtra, police said on Thursday.

The incident took place at Virar in the intervening night of July 30-31, they said.

The girl was sleeping in her house when the unidentified person came there. He took the minor to an adjoining room in the house, where he gagged and raped her before fleeing, the police said.

State Bank of India reports Rs 2,312 crore profit in Q1

Mumbai, Aug 2 (PTI) The country's largest bank SBI on Friday posted a standalone net profit of Rs 2,312.02 crore for the first quarter of current fiscal, mainly driven by higher income and reduction in bad loans.

The bank had reported a loss of Rs 4,875.85 crore in the April-June quarter of 2018-19.

SBI's standalone total income increased to Rs 70,653.23 crore in the first quarter of 2019-20 as against Rs 65,492.67 crore in the same period a year ago, as per the financial results posted by the bank on stock exchanges.

India: Tutor gets seven years RI for raping girl

Thane, Aug 1 (PTI) A special Thane court has sentenced a 28-year-old private tutor to seven years of rigorous imprisonment for raping a minor girl in 2013.

Special judge for Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act cases, S P Gondhalekar, also imposed a fine of Rs 22,000 on convict Prashant Sankatprasad Tripathi, a resident of Digha in Navi Mumbai, last week.

Additional Public Prosecutor Ujjwala Moholkar told the court Tripathi raped the girl on February 12, 2013.

India: Ambedkar's statue desecrated in UP

Bhadohi (UP), Aug 1 (PTI) A statue of Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar was desecrated by some unidentified people in Aurai area here, police said on Thursday.

The statue, installed in a government primary school, was desecrated on Wednesday night, triggering tension in the area, they said.

An FIR was registered in the matter, police said.

India: Man sentenced to life for raping minor girl in J'khand

Simdega (J'khand), Aug 1 (PTI) A court here has sentenced a 27-year-old man to life imprisonment for raping a five-year-old girl last year.

Additional District Judge Niraj Kumar Srivastav convicted Nirdosh Topno on Wednesday under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including rape, and provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The judge also imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 on Topno.

India: 3 cops protecting Unnao rape survivor suspended

Unnao (UP), Aug 1 (PTI) Three security personnel tasked with protecting the rape survivor from Unnao were suspended on Thursday on charges of dereliction of duty, police said.

The suspended police personnel are Sudesh Kumar, and women constables Sunita Devi and Ruby Patel, said Superintendent of Police, Unnao, M P Verma.

India: 17-yr-old gang-raped in Rajasthan

Jaipur, Aug 1 (PTI) Six persons have been booked for allegedly raping a girl in Rajasthan's Alwar district, police said on Thursday.

The FIR was registered at Khairthal Police Station on Tuesday on the basis of the complaint by the girl's family, they said.

The girl alleged that she was gang-raped two months ago by the accused, who also recorded the act and threatened her with dire consequences if she disclosed the incident to anyone, police said.

Edward Snowden to come out with memoir next month

New Delhi, Aug 1 (PTI) Former CIA agent and NSA contractor Edward Snowden will come out with his memoir, recounting how he created a system of mass surveillance and made the biggest leak till date.

Permanent Record will be published globally by Macmillan Publishers on September 17, it was announced Thursday.

In 2013, Snowden shocked the world when he parted with the American intelligence establishment and revealed that the US government was secretly pursuing the means to collect every phone call, text message, and email ever sent.

India: Muslim org to challenge Triple Talaq Act in SC

Hyderabad, Aug 1 (PTI) Hitting out at the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre over passage of triple talaq bill in the Parliament, a city-based Muslim organisation said on Thursday that it would move the Supreme Court against the law.

The Seerat un Nabi (PBUH) Academy alleged that the central government has sought to dilute the 'Muslim Sharia' (Islamic law).

".. lot of things need to be done for Muslim welfare. But, the BJP government chose only to dilute Muslim sharia.
