Guwahati, Aug 4 (PTI) Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi on Sunday said the present times are witnessing "belligerent and reckless behaviour" by a few individuals and some groups.

He, however, expressed optimism that such developments are just "exceptions" and will be defeated by the strong traditions of the country's legal institutions.

New Delhi, Aug 4 (PTI) The CBI is carrying out searches at multiple locations in connection with the Unnao rape victim's accident case, officials said Sunday.

The details of searches have been withheld as the operation is going on but it is understood that 17 places are being searched, they said.

On July 30, the car in which the victim, who has accused BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar of raping her as a teenager, was hit by an over-speeding truck in Rae Bareli.

Two of the victim's aunts were killed, while she and her lawyer were critically injured in the accident.

Jammu, Aug 3 (PTI) A man was arrested in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district on Saturday for allegedly raping a woman and posting her objectionable pictures on the social media, police said.

The accused, Zulfqar Ahmed of Paran village, was arrested on the complaint of the victim's father, a police officer said.

He said an FIR under relevant sections of the Ranbir Penal Code including those related to rape and the Information Technology Act was registered against the accused.

The investigation in the case is going on, the officer said.

Srinagar, Aug 3 (PTI) A senior police officer dismissed on Saturday the rumours that Jammu and Kashmir Police personnel were being asked to deposit their weapons, and asserted that strict action would be taken against people behind it.

"The tweet...in which it has been mentioned that J&K policemen are being asked to deposit their weapons and CRPF and Army were taking control of police stations, is a criminal rumour," Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Muneer Khan said.

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 3 (PTI) Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan Saturday said his government would do everything possible to bring to justice those responsible for the death of a scribe here.

In his Facebook post, he also said that the government would take necessary steps to improve the safety of journalists.

IAS officer Sriram Venkitaraman was arrested here Saturday for causing the death of a scribe by allegedly driving in an inebirated state.

Srinagar, Aug 3 (PTI) The Indian Air Force (IAF) flew 326 tourists out of Srinagar on Saturday after the state administration's advisory to pilgrims and visitors to cut short their stay and leave Kashmir Valley at the earliest, officials said.

IAF carried out two sorties from Srinagar during the day, they said.

There were 11,301 tourists when the advisory was issued and only 1,652 of them remained on Saturday.

Balasore, Aug 4 (PTI) India on Sunday test-fired a sophisticated all-weather and all-terrain Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile (QRSAM) from a test range in Odisha.

The state-of-the-art missile has been developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for the India Army.

The air defence system, QRSAM, was test-fired at 11.05 am from a mobile truck-based launch unit at complex 3 of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur near here, DRDO sources said.

Srinagar, Aug 2 (PTI) The "gloves are finally off and India has chosen territory over people", former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti said on Friday as speculations grew in the valley about some possible major decisions regarding the state's special status.

"You failed to win over the love of a single Muslim majority state which rejected division on religious grounds & chose secular India. The gloves are finally off & India has chosen territory over people," Mehbooba, the PDP president, wrote on Twitter.

Udhagamandalam, Aug 3 (PTI) A statue of St Mary was found desecrated in a church here early Saturday, police said.

Some people saw the statue without the head and informed the police.

CCTV footage in the area revealed a person entering the church premises through the rear side and vandalising the statue, they said.

A hunt was on for the vandal, they added.
