Kashmir: Yechury in Srinagar, meets Tarigami for three hours

Srinagar, Aug 29 (PTI) Armed with a Supreme Court order, CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury on Thursday met his ailing party colleague Mohammed Yousuf Tarigami who has been under house arrest since August 5.

Yechury arrived here in the afternoon and was escorted by police to meet Tarigami at his Gupkar Road residence in Srinagar's Civil Lines area.

Officials said the CPI(M) leader spent nearly three hours with Tarigami.

India: Car mechanic kills minor girl for refusing to have sex

Hyderabad, Aug 29 (PTI) A 27-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly killing a girl, a minor, whom he befriended on a social networking site, after she refused to have sex with him, police said on Thursday.

Police Inspector Adi Reddy said E Naveen Reddy, a car mechanic, and the girl became friends though the social media two months ago and on August 27 he came here to meet the 15-year-old, a class ten student.

India: Man arrested for rape bid in UP

Mathura, Aug 29 (PTI) A 65-year-old man was held for the bid to rape a minor by the Kosi Kalan police here, barely three hours after the lodging of the complaint, an official said on Thursday.

The incident had allegedly taken place on August 24 and the FIR was registered against the accused on Wednesday.

"On the basis of an input received from a reliable source, 65-year-old Bhanvar Singh, a resident of Survari village, was nabbed on Wednesday night," DSP Jagdish Kali Raman said.

India: Mobile services restored in 5 districts of Jammu region

Jammu, Aug 29 (PTI) The administration on Thursday restored mobile phone services in five "sensitive" districts of Jammu region, an official said.

The mobile phone services have been restored in Doda, Kishtwar, Ramban, Rajouri and Poonch, Jammu Divisional Commissioner Sanjeev Verma said.

The services were blocked across Jammu and Kashmir since August 5 following the abrogation of special status to the state under Article 370.

Fresh restrictions imposed in Kashmir

Srinagar, Aug 30 (PTI) Fresh restrictions were imposed in the city and other parts of the Kashmir Valley as a preventive measure ahead of Friday congregational prayers, officials said.

Restrictions under Section 144 of the CrPc were announced on public address system. People have been asked not to venture outside and barricades have been placed.

Normal life remained disrupted across the Kashmir Valley for the 26th consecutive day, with markets closed and public transport off the roads.

India: Chinmayanand case: Missing UP student found in Rajasthan

Lucknow, Aug 30 (PTI) The missing student whose father alleged she was sexually harassed by BJP leader Swami Chinmayanand was found in Rajasthan with a friend on Friday morning, police said.

The young woman, who had been missing since August 24, is fine and is being brought to Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh police chief O.P Singh told reporters here.

India: Man gets life term for raping four-year-old girl

Palghar, Aug 30 (PTI) A 27-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a special court here for kidnapping and raping a four-year-old girl in 2017.

Special Judge A U Kadam also imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 on the accused, Ghanashyam Gupta, a resident of Vasai here in Maharashtra.

The judge recently convicted Gupta under relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Indian Penal Code.

India: Fiscal deficit touches Rs 5.47 lakh crore at July-end

New Delhi, Aug 30 (PTI) The government's fiscal deficit touched Rs 5.47 lakh crore in the June quarter, which is 77.8 per cent of the budget estimate for 2019-20.

In absolute terms, the fiscal deficit or gap between expenditure and revenue was Rs 5,47,605 crore at July-end, as per the data released by the Controller General of Accounts (CGA) on Friday.

The fiscal deficit stood at 86.5 per cent of 2018-19 budget estimate in the year-ago period.

India: Cong demands financial emergency be declared in country

New Delhi, Aug 30 (PTI) The Congress on Friday demanded that a financial emergency be declared in the country and a white paper be released on the "shrinking economy and rising frauds".

Congress spokespersons Jaiveer Shergill and Gaurav Vallabh accused the BJP government of destroying the credibility of the country's economy and banking system and demanded that it should declare the names of wilful defaulters, along with the details of their non-performing assets (NPAs).

India: WB Assembly passes bill against lynching

Kolkata, Aug 30 (PTI) The West Bengal assembly Friday passed a bill to check incidents of mob assaults and lynching and criminalised such actions.

The West Bengal (Prevention of Lynching) Bill, 2019 was tabled in the House on Friday and supported by the opposition Congress and CPI(M).

The BJP, which has emerged as the main opposition party, neither supported nor opposed the bill as it felt that the legislation may be used for settling political scores.
