US Senator Bernie Sanders says 'deeply concerned' about situation in Kashmir

Houston, Sep 1 (PTI) US Senator and Democratic presidential contender Bernie Sanders told a gathering of Muslims that he was "deeply concerned" about the situation in Kashmir and asked the US government to "speak out boldly" in support of a UN-backed peaceful resolution to resolve the issue.

Addressing the annual convention of the Islamic Society of North America in Houston on Saturday, the 77-year-old leader also sought an immediate end to communications blockade in Kashmir.

New Delhi, Sep 1 (PTI) Finding something good Prime Minister Narendra Modi has done would be like looking for a needle in a haystack, senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid said on Sunday, days after some party leaders called for praising the PM whenever he does good work.

Khurshid also said the Congress has "very serious concerns" about how the country is being run.

India: Shocked to see 1 lakh Gorkha people excluded from NRC: Mamata

Kolkata, Sep 1 (PTI) Iterating that the Centre must ensure no genuine Indians are left out of the NRC, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday said she was "shocked" to find out that one lakh people of the Gorkha community have been excluded from the list.

The TMC supremo insisted that "justice should be meted out to all Indian brothers and sisters".

India: BJP MLA seeks NRC in Telangana

Hyderabad, Aug 31 (PTI) After Assam released its final list of national register of citizens, a BJP MLA in Telangana on Saturday raised the demand for a similar exercise in the State.

Appealing to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Raja Singh, the lone BJP MLA in Telangana, said NRC should be implemented from September 17, the day of merger of erstwhile princely state of Hyderabad with the Indian Union in 1948.

"I request @HMOIndia again #NRC should be implemented in Telangana as well," he tweeted.

India: Sitting MLA, Kargil veteran left out of NRC

Guwahati, Aug 31 (PTI) A Kargil veteran, a sitting and an ex-MLA of the AIDUF were among those whose names were excluded from the final NRC, which was released here on Saturday.

The daughter of Congress MLA Ilias Ali too found her name missing though the legislator and his other family members made it to the updated list.

Kargil war veteran and retired army officer Mohammad Sanaullah, who spent a few days in detention in May after being declared a foreigner by a tribunal, was excluded from the updated list.

Climate change: India seeks financial, technology support from West

Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Prakash Javadekar said India, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was taking decisive steps in achieving Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), which is the heart of the 2015 Paris pact.

New Delhi, Sep 1 (PTI) Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Sunday said the state of the economy was "deeply worrying" and urged the government to put aside "vendetta politics" and reach out to sane voices and thinking minds to steer the economy out of this "man-made crisis".

The Congress leader said "all-round mismanagement" by the Modi government was responsible for the slowdown.

India: Young supervisor hangs himself to death

Kanpur: A supervisor hanged himself to death at Kahoo Kothi area here. The neighbours informed the police on stench emanating from his apartment. When the police opened the door the sight was astonishing for all.

A report of his missing was registered on Saturday night. On Sunday morning he was found hanging.

He had been living in the flat with his wife Durga. He had been working as a supervisor for the past six years in the under-construction apartment of a company at Kahoo Kothi.

India: Teenaged rape victim commits suicide in Chhattisgarh

Korba, Sep 1 (PTI) A 16-year-old rape victim allegedly committed suicide in Chhattisgarh's Korba district, a police official said on Sunday.

The girl hanged herself on Saturday in the bathroom of a hotel room where she was staying after appearing before members of National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), he said.

The teenager, a native of a small village in Korba, left her home in June this year without informing anyone and went to neighbouring Bilaspur district.

India: Jet fuel price cut by 1%, LPG rate up by Rs 15.5

New Delhi, Sep 1 (PTI) Jet fuel price on Sunday was cut by about 1 per cent to a four-month low on softening international oil prices, according to state-owned fuel retailers.

Market-priced or non-subsidised cooking gas (LPG) price was however raised by Rs 15.5 per cylinder, oil firms said in a price notification.
