India: Babri Masjid litigant Iqbal Ansari attacked in his house

Ayodhya, Sep 3 (PTI) Iqbal Ansari, one of the main litigants in the Babri Masjid dispute, was on Tuesday allegedly physically assaulted at his house here by two people who, he claimed, threatened to kill him if he did not withdraw the case.

His security personnel intervened and saved him from the attackers who were detained by police.

Ansari told PTI that on Tuesday afternoon, a man and a woman reached his residence.

Ayodhya: SC notices 2 for threatening Dhavan for representing Sunni WB

New Delhi, Sep 3 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Tuesday sought responses from two persons for allegedly threatening senior advocate Rajeev Dhavan for taking up the case on behalf of the Sunni Waqf Board and other Muslim parties in the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid land dispute matter.

"Notice," said the five-judge Constitution bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi at the start of hearing on the 18th day in the land dispute case.

The bench has put up contempt pleas for hearing after two weeks.

India: Bajaj Auto sales down by 11% in Aug

New Delhi, Sep 3 (PTI) Bajaj Auto on Tuesday reported 11 per cent fall in total sales at 3,90,026 units in August.

The company had sold 437,092 units in the same month a year ago.

Domestic sales in August this year stood at 2,08,109 units as against 2,55,631 units, down 19 per cent, Bajaj Auto said in a regulatory filing.

India: PS Banks' stocks plunge after merger announcement

New Delhi, Sep 3 (PTI) Public sector bank stocks, led by Corporation Bank and Punjab National Bank, tumbled up to 9.3 per cent on Tuesday after the government announced the merger of 10 state-run lenders into four.

Shares of Corporation Bank tanked 9.28 per cent to Rs 17.10, Punjab National Bank plunged 8.54 per cent to Rs 59.40, Canara Bank dropped 7.54 per cent to its one-year low of Rs 203.90.

India: Assam docs abstain from work to protest colleague's killing

Guwahati, Sept 3 (PTI) Doctors in Assam were on a 24-hour strike on Tuesday to protest the assault on an elderly doctor at a tea garden that led to his death, officials said.

Emergency services have been kept out of the purview of the stir.

Seventy three-year-old Dr Deben Dutta had succumbed to his injuries after being assaulted by relatives of a tea garden worker who died while undergoing treatment at a hospital at Teok Tea Estate in Jorhat district on Saturday.

India, Russia want to diversify, strengthen bilateral relations: PM Modi

New Delhi, Sep 3 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said he looks forward to discussing regional and international issues of mutual interest with Russian President Vladimir Putin during his visit to Vladivostok to attend the Eastern Economic Forum.

He also said his visit underlines the desire of the two countries to diversity and further strengthen bilateral relations.

Modi's visit to the Russian Far East Region is the first by an Indian prime minister.

Indian PM Modi to visit Vladivostok, summit with Putin on Sep 4

New Delhi, Sep 2 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Russia from September 4 to 5 during which he will hold a bilateral summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin and attend the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, the External Affairs Ministry announced on Monday.

Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale, at a media briefing, said the visit will be a short one, lasting about 36 hours.

India: Breastfeeding pods in Ker railway stations

Thiruvananthapuram, Sept 2 (PTI) Creating a safe and comfortable zone for lactating mothers during journeys, a startup mentored by the Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM) has launched a project for installing state-of-the-art breastfeeding pods at three railway stations in the state.

Christened Domatio, the new age breastfeeding pod has already been set up in Thrissur Railway Station and the facility will be opened in Thiruvananthapuram Central and Ernakulam South in the coming days.

India: TMC to hold mass protests against NRC in WB

Kolkata, Sep 2 (PTI) Trinamool Congress leadership Monday decided to hold mass protests across West Bengal from this week opposing NRC in neighbouring Assam, party sources said.

The decision was taken at an emergency meeting at Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's residence Monday afternoon.

It was decided that the mass protests would be held on September 7-8 against the National Register of Citizens and the divisive politics of BJP, the sources said.

India: Want fair and speedy trial in Unnao rape case, says SC

New Delhi, Sep 2 (PTI) The Supreme Court Monday said it wanted "fair and speedy trial" in the cases arising out of the rape of a minor allegedly by ex-BJP legislator Kuldeep Singh Sengar in Unnao.

The top court sought a report from the special judge Dharmesh Sharma, who is holding trial in cases arising out of the Unnao rape.

A bench of Justices Deepak Gupta and Aniruddha Bose sought the report from the trial court judge by September 6, on how much time is needed for the completion of the trial.
