India: Class I student booked for attempt to rape in Haryana

Chandigarh, Sep 2 (PTI) The Haryana Police has registered a case of attempt to rape against a Class 1 student on a complaint of the mother of a five-year-old victim, an official said.

Police are trying identify the boy.

The incident took place three days ago in Sirsa district, Deputy Superintendent of Police Ramesh Kumar said.

India: Former Chhattisgarh CM's son Amit Jogi arrested

Bilaspur, Sep 3 (PTI) Former Chhattisgarh chief minister Ajit Jogi's son Amit Jogi, who heads the Janata Congress Chhattisgarh (J), was arrested on Tuesday in the state's Bilaspur district on charges of cheating and forgery, police said.

The arrest was made following a police complaint lodged against him by Sameera Paikra, the BJP candidate from Marwahi constituency in the 2013 state Assembly polls.

India: Court sentences nine in Nari Niketan rape case

Dehradun, Sept 3 (PTI) A Dehradun court has sentenced the main accused in the rape and abortion case of a hearing and speech impaired inmate at a government-run shelter home here in 2015 to seven years in prison.

The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Dharam Singh on Monday also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on Gurudas - the main convict in the case who worked as a sweeper at the Nari Niketan.

His jail term will be increased by 30 days in case he does not pay the fine, the ADSJ said while pronouncing the judgement.

India: Govt hikes ethanol procurement price for fuel blending

New Delhi, Sep 3 (PTI) The government on Tuesday announced an increase in the price of ethanol procured by public sector oil marketing companies for one year starting December.

The decision was taken by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi here.

The price of ethanol derived from C heavy molasses has been increased from Rs 43.46 a litre to Rs 43.75 per litre, and for B heavy molasses to Rs 54.27 per litre from Rs 52.43 earlier, an official release said.

India: Dalit girl raped, murdered in UP

Jalaun (UP), Sep 3 (PTI) A teenage Dalit girl was raped and murdered allegedly by her neighbour and the body was found with her eyes gouged out here, police said on Tuesday.

The accused Ranjit Ahirwar has been arrested, Superintendent of Police Satish Kumar said.

The 17-year-old girl went missing on August 31 and her body with eyes gouged out was found the next day, police said, adding the postmortem confirmed rape.

India: Chidambaram produced in court

New Delhi, Sep 3 (PTI) Former finance minister P Chidambaram Tuesday was produced before a Delhi court on expiry of his one day CBI custody in the INX Media corruption case.

Just after an hour the apex court ordered that Chidambaram will be in the CBI custody till September 5, he was produced before Special Judge Ajay Kumar Kuhar.

The CBI has placed an application before the court seeking two more days of Chidambaram's custody.

Indian landing module ready for touchdown on moon surface

NEW DELHI (AP) — The landing module of India’s unmanned moon mission separated from the orbiter on Monday ahead of its planned touchdown on the moon’s south polar region this weekend, the space agency said.

All the systems of the orbiter and the lander are “healthy,” the Indian Space Research Organization said in a statement.

India manufacturing PMI drops to 15-month low in Aug

New Delhi, Sep 2 (PTI) The country's manufacturing sector activity declined to its 15-month low in August, owing to slower increases in sales, output and employment, a monthly survey said on Monday.

The IHS Markit India Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI), fell to 51.4 in August, its lowest mark since May 2018, from 52.5 in July, as most survey indicators fell since July to signal a widespread loss of momentum.
