India: 54-yr-old held for trying to rape minor in Gurgaon

Gurgaon, Sep 17 (PTI) A 54-year-old man accused of attempting to rape a minor girl here was arrested Tuesday, police said.

The eight-year-old girl was sleeping with her parents when the accused, a resident of the same building, took her to his room, Gurgaon police PRO Subhas Bokan said.

Hearing the girl scream, her mother woke up and started looking for her. She reached the room of the accused where she found him sexually harassing her, Bokan said.

Delhi govt to provide coaching to IAS aspirants in Urdu

New Delhi, Sep 17 (PTI) The Delhi government is likely to provide coaching to IAS aspirants in Urdu, taking steps towards making the language a means to build a career, an official statement said on Tuesday.

It stated Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Art, Culture and Languages Manish Sisodia interacted with toppers in Urdu language hailing from various universities of Delhi on Monday evening.

"The Urdu Academy should start providing coaching to interested students," the statement quoted Sisodia as saying at the event.

India: BJP to protest against MP Congress govt on Friday

Bhopal, Sep 18 (PTI) The BJP will stage protests across Madhya Pradesh on Friday against the Congress-led state government's "apathetic attitude" towards the flood-affected people, a saffron party leader said on Wednesday.

The Congress government has "turned a deaf ear" to the problems being faced by cultivators and other people due to heavy rains and subsequent floods in parts of MP, state BJP Chief Rakesh Singh alleged.

India: Azad, Ahmed Patel meet Chidambaram in Tihar jail

New Delhi, Sep 18 (PTI) Senior Congress leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad and Ahmed Patel met former finance minister P Chidambaram at Tihar Jail on Wednesday morning, sources said.

They were accompanied by Chidambaram's son and Congress MP, Karti.

The leaders are learnt to have discussed the current political situation, including Kashmir, upcoming elections and the economic situation in the country, during the half-hour meeting, the sources added.

Chidambaram has been lodged in Tihar jail since September 5 on charges of corruption in the INX Media case.

India: prisoners to run fuel stations in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 18 (PTI): After their success in dishing out delicious and cost-effective food items, prisoners in Kerala are now gearing up to manage fuel stations, thanks to an innovative government initiative.

Drawing inspiration from their counterparts in Tamil Nadu and Punjab, the Prison Department is all set to open petrol pumps in the outer campuses of three central jails in the state, envisaged to be run by selected inmates.

The Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) is setting up the pumps in the land, identified by the prison department.

India: Comp hardware gone missing from aircraft carrier being built

Kochi, Sept 18 (PTI) In a suspected case of theft, some computer hardware has gone missing from the country's first indigenous aircraft carrier being built in the Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL) here, police said.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has launched a probe into the matter following a complaint regarding the missing hardware even as the City Police Commissioner was monitoring the investigation.

"Although reported missing from the carrier, the hardware does not form part of the equipment of the vessel," they said.

Lightning Kills 17 In India’s Eastern State

NEW DELHI, Sept 18 (NNN-PTI) – As many as 17 people, some children, have died in incidents of lightning strikes, in different parts of Bihar state, India, in the last 24 hours, media reports said today (Wednesday).

According to a report by Zee News, four deaths were reported in the state’s Kaimur district, four in Gaya, one in Katihar, three in Motihari, one in Ara and two each in Jahanabad and Arwal districts.

Several parts of the state have been witnessing heavy rains over the past 24 hours.

India: Zoo to observe wildlife week in October

Kanpur: Famous Allen Forest Zoo is going to organise a Wild Life Week from Oct 1 to 7. During these seven days, the school children will get free entry. There is also a plan to hold various competitions on the occasion.

As the zoo administration will take a decision to increase the entry fee in its forthcoming meeting under the chairmanship of the zoo director Sunil Chowdhary, it is a good chance for the students to enjoy a few time at the zoo. At present, there are as many as 1486 animals and birds of 123 species.

India: Women are unsafe in the country: Subhasini Ali

Kanpur: Speaking at the 11th state-level conference of Janvadi Mahila Samiti at a guest house in Azad Nagar here on Tuesday, Subhasini Ali, ex-MP said the women were most unsafe in Independent India. Their exploitation was being done despite the prevalence of strict rules.

Laying stress on various other relevant and political issues she pointed out that industries were losing its value day by day which has influenced the women class to a greater extent. They were not only facing the brunt of unemployment but also bearing with insecurity all around.
