India: Chidambaram slams state of economy

New Delhi, Nov 4 (PTI) Incarcerated Congress leader P Chidambaram on Monday referred to an editorial in the Economist magazine that said the Indian economy is "incompetently managed and doing badly".

The former finance minister, who is in jail for alleged corruption in the INX Media case, also said in a tweet that the magazine is read by the Fortune 500 companies that will invest in India.

"Read the Economist magazine of October 26. It is read by the Fortune 500 companies that must invest in India.

India: Oppn leaders meet today to discuss economic issues, RCEP

New Delhi, Nov 4 (PTI) Senior opposition leaders will assemble here on Monday afternoon to discuss the slide in the economy as well as the ongoing Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership negotiations in Bangkok and the agreement's implications for India.

UPA chairperson and Congress president Sonia Gandhi will lead the discussions at the meeting that comes ahead of the winter session of Parliament beginning November 18.

India: 32 flights diverted from Delhi airport Sunday morning due to low visibility caused by pollution: Airport officials

New Delhi, Nov 3; GANASHAKTI: Thirty-two flights were diverted from Delhi airport on Sunday morning due to low visibility caused by pollution, airport officials said.

"Total 32 flights have been diverted from Delhi airport on Sunday morning due to bad weather," they said.

An Air India spokesperson said, "Due to bad weather, flight operations affected since morning 9 am in T3 airport (Delhi). Twelve flights are diverted to Jaipur, Amritsar and Lucknow."

India: Bar Council Calls for Strike on Monday After Clashes Between Cops, Lawyers at Delhi's Tis Hazari Court

New Delhi; 3 Nov 2019; GANASHAKTI: Lawyers' bodies led by the Bar Council of India (BCI) on Saturday condemned the alleged police action during a clash at Tis Hazari Court complex here in which at least 10 police personnel and several lawyers were injured.

The apex body termed the "brutal police action" beyond tolerance and demanded stern action against erring policemen. The Bar associations have decided to boycott work on Monday across all district courts in Delhi.

India: Indefinite strike by lawyers hits work in courts across Jammu

Jammu, Nov 2 (PTI) Work at the high court and lower courts was affected in most parts of Jammu region on Saturday, following an indefinite strike by lawyers against the recent decision to divest the judicial courts of its powers to register various documents and vest the same with the revenue department.

The strike call was given by Jammu chapter of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court Bar Association (JKHCBA) on Friday, also opposing the proposal to shift the high court from its present location at Janipur to the outskirts of the city.

India's coal imports rise 9 pc to 127 MT in Apr-Sept

New Delhi, Nov 3 (PTI) India's coal imports increased by 9.3 per cent to 126.91 million tonnes (MT) in the first six months of the ongoing fiscal, industry data showed.

The country had imported 116.04 MT of coal in April-September period of FY 2018-19, according to a provisional compilation by mjunction services, based on monitoring of vessels' positions and data received from shipping companies.

Over 3,000 Indian fishermen chased away by Lankan Navy

Rameswaram (TN), Nov 3 (PTI) Over 3,000 fishermen from Tamil Nadu were allegedly chased away by Sri Lankan Navy on Sunday when they were fishing near Katchatheevu islet, a fishermen association leader said here.

The naval personnel also snapped fishing nets of several boats.

The fishermen from this island town had ventured into the sea in over 500 boats and were catching fish near Katchatheevu when the Lankan Navy personnel came to the spot, cut the nets and chased them away, State fishermen association President N Devadoss said.
