India: Six die in tempo-trailer accident on Kanpur Highway

Kanpur: Six die in a road accident on the Lucknow-Kanpur Highway on Friday night. 

A tempo and a trailer were involved in the accident.

Apart from the six people who died, the condition of one more individual is critical. They have been admitted to the trauma centre.

The tempo had reportedly collided with the trailer when it was reversing.

The accident happened on the Kanpur Highway in the Banthar or Banthra police station area.

NEW DELHI, June 17 (Reuters) - Authorities imposed restrictions on Friday on gatherings in a satellite city of India's capital that is home to offices of several multinational firms, and one person was killed as protests against a new military recruitment process spread.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government unveiled the new recruitment system this week, called Agnipath or "path of fire" in Hindi, triggering turmoil with police firing into the air to break up stone-throwing crowds and the torching of railway infrastructure.

Dilip Kumar should get Bharat Ratna: Saira Banu

Mumbai, Jun 15 (PTI) Veteran actor Saira Banu says her late husband actor Dilip Kumar should be honoured with the Bharat Ratna as he is the "kohinoor" of the country.

Saira attended the Bharat Ratna Dr Ambedkar Award on late Tuesday evening, where union minister Ramdas Athawale presented the honour to Dilip Kumar, who passed away last year aged 98.

At the event, Athawale said he would request Prime Minister Narendra Modi to consider awarding Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian honour of the country, to the Hindi cinema legend.

India: POCSO case against Bishop quashed by Karnataka HC

Bengaluru, June 15 (PTI) The Karnataka High Court has quashed the criminal proceedings against Reverend Prasanna Kumar Samuel in a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Prasanna Kumar Samuel is a Bishop of Church of South India (CSI) Karnataka Central Diocese, Bengaluru.

India: Countrywide stir needed to stall Agnipath scheme: Tikait

Haridwar, Jun 16 (PTI) Bhartiya Kisan Union leader Rakesh Tikait on Thursday opposed the Centre's "Agnipath" scheme for recruitment to the armed forces, saying a countrywide movement is needed to stall it.

On farmers' issues, Tikait said the country now needs another big movement.

"Till now, the youth were getting at least 15 years' service in the armed forces and a pension post-retirement but after the implementation of this scheme, when they retire from the services of the armed forces, they will return home without pension," Tikait said.

India: Protest against Agnipath scheme disrupts traffic on Yamuna Expressway

Noida, Jun 17 (PTI) Protests against the Centre's Agnipath scheme continued on Friday as scores of youngsters descended on Yamuna Expressway and blocked traffic movement briefly, officials said.

The movement through Jewar toll plaza between Greater Noida and Mathura-Agra was blocked for around an hour from 12 pm, the officials said.
