India: New Year's message board steals the spotlight

KANPUR: A very large board on Purani Chungi turn of the road leading towards Jajmau displays a message Happy New Year 2020. Greetings much in advance say the road users adding that the year's last month has yet not on the verge of completion. Then what is hurry in displaying the message? Question a good many passers-by.

The road remains busy from morning till late at night and every eye falls on the big, bold letters of the usual coming fresh year's greeting. 

India in growth recession; extreme centralisation of power in PMO not good: Rajan

New Delhi, Dec 8 (PTI) Former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) governor Raghuram Rajan said India is in the midst of a "growth recession" with signs of deep malaise in the Indian economy that is being run through extreme centralisation of power in Prime Minister's Office and powerless ministers.

India: UP govt plans cow safaris

Lucknow, Dec 8 (PTI) Faced with stray cattle menace, the Uttar Pradesh government plans to set up 'cow safaris' in the state for better safety and upkeep of the animal.

The idea mooted by UP Animal and Husbandry minister Laxmi Narayan Chaudhary is in line with the Yogi government's aim of cow protection.

"The Yogi government is vigilant towards cow protection and it is our duty to save and secure them," Chaudhary said.

India: Centre wanted to wreck my mental strength: Chidambaram

Chennai, Dec 7 (PTI) Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Saturday accused the Central government of trying to wreck his mental strength by imprisoning him in the INX Media case.

The former Minister, who spent 106 days in Delhi's Tihar jail, however, did not explicitly mention the case against him filed by the Enforcement Directorate or the CBI.

India: Case filed against Paswan over onion price rise

Muzaffarpur (Bihar), Dec 7 (PTI) A criminal complaint case was filed against union minister Ram Vilas Paswan in Muzaffarpur Civil Court on Saturday for "misleading and cheating" people on the rise in the price of onions.

The case was filed by a person named M Raju Nayyar, who claims to be a social worker, in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Surya Kant Tiwary who posted the matter for hearing on December 12.

India: Protests at Jantar Mantar against citizenship bill, NRC

New Delhi, Dec 7 (PTI) Several people under different banners gathered at the Jantar Mantar here on Saturday to protest against the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) and the NRC.

Organised by an NGO named United Against Hate, the protesters were carrying placards with slogans like: 'Reject CAB! Boycott NRC!', 'India need jobs, education and health care, not nationwide NRC!'

Students from different universities, including JNU, Jamia Millia Islamia and the Aligarh Muslim University, as well as members of the All India Students' Association (AISA), joined the protest.

India: Chhattisgarh: youth held for `raping' six-year-old girl

Raigarh, Dec 7 (PTI) A six-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a youth in Chhattisgarh's Raigarh district, the police said on Saturday.

The accused, who lives in the girl's neighbourhood, entered her house on Friday evening when she was alone and allegedly raped her, said Kiran Gupta, Station House Officer of Lailunga police station.

India: Five youth held for molesting school girl in Gurgaon

Gurgaon, Dec 7 (PTI) Five men were arrested in Gurgaon for allegedly molesting a minor girl as she was returning home from school, police said on Saturday.

The incident occurred around noon on Friday under Farukh Nagar police station area and the girl's father lodged a complaint against the accused, Gurgaon police PRO Subhash Boken said.

India: Man rapes minor daughter, poisons her to conceal crime

Chandigarh, Dec 7 (PTI) The Haryana Police has arrested a man who allegedly raped his daughter and killed her by administering rat poison in a bid to conceal his crime, an official said on Saturday.

The accused was arrested on Friday from Indore, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Headquarters) Gorakhpal told reporters in Rohtak.

The accused, a factory worker, had a strained relationship with his wife and the couple had been living separately at Rohtak for the past six months.

India: Law and order has broken down, PM is 'mute': Cong

New Delhi, Dec 8 (PTI) The Congress on Sunday attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi over rape incidents in various parts of the country, alleging that rule of law has broken down but the PM is "mute" and has not said a word on it.

Congress' chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala also tagged a video of Prime Minister Modi attacking the then Congress government over rape incidents in Delhi.
