India: Citizenship bill patently unconstitutional, battleground to shift to SC: Chidambaram

New Delhi, Dec 10 (PTI) Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram described the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill as "patently unconstitutional" on Tuesday and said with its passage in Parliament, the battleground will shift to the Supreme Court.

He claimed that the elected lawmakers were abdicating their responsibilities in favour of lawyers and judges.

India: Missing Delhi journalist found dead in Haridwar

Haridwar, Dec 9 (PTI) A journalist from Delhi, who had gone missing under mysterious circumstances, was found dead in this city of Uttarakhand on Monday, police said.

The body of 56-year-old Anuj Gupta with two veins in the wrist of one hand slit was recovered from Pathri Powerhouse on Gangnahar canal, Jwalapur police station in-charge Yogesh Dev said.

Gupta had gone missing on Saturday.

India: Jaipur cinema theatres stop screening 'Panipat'

Jaipur, Dec 9 (PTI) Several theatres here stopped screening Ashutosh Gowariker's "Panipat" on Monday, amid criticism by Jat groups over the film's portrayal of Bharatpur's Maharaja Surajmal.

According to the management at some cinemas, the shows were cancelled followed instructions from the administration. The screenings will resume only after further orders, they said.

India: Jat body seeks ban on 'Panipat', says facts distorted

Chandigarh, Dec 9 (PTI) A prominent Jat body on Monday demanded a ban on the screening of Ashutosh Gowariker's "Panipat", alleging that it depicted Jat ruler Maharaja Surajmal in an unseemly light.

All-India Jat Aarakshan Sangarsh Samiti's national president Yashpal Malik also alleged that historical facts had been distorted in the film.

At its core committee meeting in Rohtak's Jassia, the organisation demanded legal action against the film producer besides a ban on it in Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and other places.

India: 20 kg onion looted from state-run store in West Bengal

Suri (WB), Dec 9 (PTI) Around 20 kg onion was allegedly looted from a state-run store in West Bengal's Birbhum district on Monday, an official said.

The incident happened at a Sufal Bangla store at the Bolpur bus stand area of the district, where onions at subsidised price were being sold, he said.

India: UP Police to drop women at late hours

Lucknow, Dec 9 (PTI) Come Tuesday, Uttar Pradesh Police will drop women travelling alone late at night to their destination to ensure their safety.

If any woman is alone on the streets from 10 pm to 6 pm, she can dial 112. The Police Response Vehicle (PRV) with women police personnel will drop her to her destination, Director General of Police O P Singh on Monday told PTI.

The PRV will also escort women driving scooters, if need arises, he said.

India: 11-hr Northeast bandh begins to protest against CAB

Guwahati, Dec 10 (PTI) The 11-hour Northeast bandh called by an umbrella body of students' organisations of the region to protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill began at 5 am on Tuesday.

The North East Students' Organisation (NESO), backed by various other bodies and political parties, will observe the shutdown till 4 pm against the Bill which was introduced in the Lok Sabha on Monday.

Security was beefed up in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura.

India: Two brothers arrested for raping teenaged girl in Maha

Nagpur, Dec 10 (PTI) A 14-year-old girl was allegedly raped by two brothers on various occasions in the last one month in Maharashtra's Nagpur district, a police official said on Tuesday.

The two accused have been arrested, he said.

One of the accused, Akash Sanjay Karemore (27), took the girl to Gangapur Takalghat village here last month on the pretext of marriage and allegedly raped her there, he said.

India: 'Very poor' air quality in Delhi for 7th day

New Delhi, Dec 10 (PTI) The air quality remained in the "very poor" category in the national capital for the seventh consecutive day on Tuesday as the cold weather and calm winds allowed accumulation of pollutants.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) in the city was recorded at 356 at 8.45 am.

An AQI between 0-50 is considered "good", 51-100 "satisfactory", 101-200 "moderate", 201-300 "poor", 301-400 "very poor" and 401-500 "severe". An AQI above 500 falls in the "severe plus" category.

India: HC stays proceedings in defamation case against Kejriwal

New Delhi, Dec 10 (PTI) The Delhi High Court on Tuesday put on hold the proceedings in a criminal defamation complaint against Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for re-tweeting an allegedly defamatory video circulated by YouTuber Dhruv Rathee in May, 2018.

Justice Suresh Kait issued notices to the state and the complainant, seeking their stand on a plea by Kejriwal challenging the summons issued to him in the case by a trial court.
