India suffers hottest decade on record

NEW DELHI, Jan 7 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The last decade was India’s hottest on record with the national weather office calling the impact of global warming “unmistakable” and extreme weather killing more than 1,500 people last year.

India, home to 1.3 billion people, is at the forefront of climate change suffering devastating floods, dire water shortages and baking temperatures. The southern city of Chennai last year declared “day zero” as taps ran dry.

MEERUT, India (AP) — Sometimes Arshad Hussain disappears. He will be sitting on the bed, watching relatives, neighbors and journalists pour into his house when suddenly scenes of his dead son wash over him.

“I find myself on the street, staring at the concrete path where my son bled to death,” he said quietly, leaning against the exposed brick walls of his house in Nehtaur, a small north Indian town about 190 kilometers (120 miles) from New Delhi.

India: Tata Nano ends 2019 with zero production, sales of 1 unit

New Delhi, Jan 6 (PTI) Tata Motors did not produce a single unit of its entry-level car Nano in 2019 although it sold just one unit in February even as the company is yet to officially retire Ratan Tata's "people's car".

According to a regulatory filing by the company, Tata Motors had zero production and sales of the Nano in December 2019 while it produced 82 units and sold 88 units in December 2018.

India: Man 'sexually assaults' 5-yr-old girl

Hyderabad, Jan 5 (PTI) A 5-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted by a construction worker in Nacharam area here on Sunday, police said.

The accused, who is absconding, lives in her neighbourhood.

The 30-year-old man lured the girl by offering chocolates and took her to a newly constructed house and allegedly sexually assaulted her there, they said.

India: Protest march against Citizenship (Amendment) Act

Guwahati, Jan 5 (PTI) Protest against the amended Citizenship Act continued across Assam on Sunday with thousands of people hitting the streets in the state capital in a 15-km long march originating from Bhupen Hazarika's memorial.

Called by the artiste community and supported by All Assam Students' Union (AASU) and Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chhatra Parishad (AJYCP), the march was joined by anti-CAA leaders like Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharya, Lurinjyoti Gogoi and popular singer Zubeen Garg.

India: Swaraj Abhiyan chief Yogendra Yadav manhandled outside JNU

New Delhi, Jan 5 (PTI) Swaraj Abhiyan chief Yogendra Yadav was allegedly manhandled outside the Jawaharlal Nehru University campus where a clash broke out between members of the students' union and the ABVP.

Yadav said no one was there to stop the "hooliganism" and he was not allowed to speak to the media.

He alleged that police personnel were standing but were not doing anything, saying "if the police is afraid, they can take out their uniform".

India: BJP launches door-to-door campaign over CAA in MP

Bhopal, Jan 5 (PTI) The BJP started a campaign to drum up support for the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) in Madhya Pradesh on Sunday, saying it was aimed at dispelling the "misinformation" spread by the opposition.

Union Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said at a meeting in Morena district that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has ushered in rapid development in the country, and the Congress was resorting to protests against the CAA because it has no other issue left.

India: Kerala CM condemns violence at JNU

Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 6 (PTI) Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday condemned the violence at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New in Delhi and said "Nazi- style attacks" on students and teachers inside the campus was an attempt to create unrest and violence in the country.

Vijayan said the attack on students is an "appalling display of intolerance running amok" and asked the Sangh Parivar forces to end its "diabolical plan" to silence the universities with bloodshed.

India: JNUTA writes to Prez, demands removal of VC

New Delhi, Jan 6 (PTI) The Jawaharlal Nehru Teachers' Association has written to the President, who is the Visitor to the varsity, demanding the removal of the Vice Chancellor.

Holding the Vice Chancellor responsible for the "orgy of violence" in JNU on Sunday, JNUTA said entry of goons into the campus without connivance of the adminstration was not possible.

"The JNUTA with full sense of responsibility accuses the JNU Administration headed by the Vice-Chancellor of being responsible for the orgy of violence in JNU," they said.

India: Akhilesh, Mayawati condemn violence inside JNU campus

Lucknow, Jan 6 (PTI) Samajwadi Party supremo Akhilesh Yadav and BSP chief Mayawati condemned the violence inside Jawaharlal Nehru University in which students and teachers were attacked by masked persons.

Hitting out at the Centre, Yadav said that masked men attacking teachers and students in JNU shows how "low" the government will stoop to rule through "fear" adding that the BJP is using violence and hate to polarise society.
