India: Two FIRs lodged for vandalism at JNU server room

Delhi, Jan 7 (PTI) The Delhi Police has registered two FIRs in connection with vandalism at the server room at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, police said on Tuesday.

The FIRs were registered on the complaint of JNU administration on January 5, they said.

The JNU administration had given the names of students union office bearers including its president Aishe Gosh in connection with the vandalism but police have not put her name or that of other students in the accused column of the FIRs.

New Delhi, Jan 7 (PTI) The Centre has warned its employees of "consequences" if they go on strike called on January 8 by one of their associations to protest against union government's policies including labour reforms, foreign direct investment (FDI) and privatisation, according to a Personnel ministry order.

India: Fringe Hindu terror group claims responsibility for JNU attack

New Delhi, Jan 7 (PTI) A fringe right-wing group, Hindu Raksha Dal, has purportedly taken responsibility for the attack on JNU students in a video posted on social media.

The video, which was posted on social media on Monday and has gone viral since, shows a man identifying himself as Pinki Chaudhary saying that those who resort to "anti-national activities" will be treated in the same way that JNU students and faculty were.

He later told news channels that others involved in "anti-national activities" will face similar attacks.

India: Hindu body demands ban on Congress book on Savarkar

Panaji, Jan 7 (PTI) The Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) on Tuesday demanded ban on the book on Hindutva ideologue V D Savarkar over its "objectionable content".

The book titled "Veer Savarkar, Kitne 'Veer'?" was distributed by Congress-affiliated Seva Dal in Bhopal on January 2, questioning his credentials as a patriot. It also made some insinuations on Savarkar and Mahatma Gandhi's killer Nathuram Godse.

India: 1838 bunkers constructed along LoC in Rajouri

Jammu, Jan 7 (PTI) As many as 1838 bunkers have been constructed in various villages along the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district, officials said.

This was stated at a meeting of officers chaired by District Development Commissioner, Rajouri, Mohammad Nazir Sheikh to review bunker construction in the district, they said.

Goa ratifies bill to extend SC/ST quota in legislatures

Panaji, Jan 7 (PTI) Goa Assembly on Tuesday ratified the constitutional amendment bill that extends reservations to Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes in the Lok Sabha and state Assemblies by another 10 years.

Speaker Rajesh Patnekar disallowed the adjournment notice submitted by the opposition parties on the Mahadayi water diversion issue, saying one-day session of the Assembly was called by the state governor for ratifying the bill for extending the SC/ST quota in legislatures.

Bengal govt to operate more buses during Left bandh

Kolkata, Jan 7 (PTI) The West Bengal government will operate "22 per cent" more buses that what plies on a normal day during a bandh called by Left parties on Wednesday, Transport Minister Suvendu Adhikari said.

The West Bengal Transport Corporation will operate 1,150 buses compared to a daily average of 900, while South Bengal State Transport Corporation will run 826 buses as against a normal of 692, Adhikari said on Tuesday.

India: Odisha has begun process to update NPR: Official

Bhubaneswar, Jan 7 (PTI) Amid a countrywide brouhaha over the implementation of the amended citizenship law, the Odisha government has initiated the process to update the National Population Register (NPR), with the launch of a pilot survey, an official said.

A door-to-door survey would be conducted soon as part of the process, he said.

India: Under fire from students and faculty, JNU VC asks students return to campus

New Delhi, Jan 7 (PTI) Under fire from students and faculty members for not doing enough when they were brutally attacked by a masked mob on campus, Jawaharlal Nehru University Vice Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar on Tuesday urged students to put the past behind and return to the varsity's premises.

In a brief statement, Kumar said, "Our heart goes out to all injured students. The incident (violence) is unfortunate. I would like to tell students that JNU campus is a secure place.

"I urge all students to come back to the campus. Let us put the past behind."

India: Owaisi slams police for booking injured JNU students

Hyderabad, Jan 7 (PTI) Condemning the police for filing cases against students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) injured in recent violence, AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi on Tuesday said trespass and attempt to murder cases should be booked against those responsible for the incidents.

He also demanded that the vice-chancellor of JNU should quit and go if there is any shame left over the violence as he was supposed to be the guardian of the students.
