India: March to Jantar Mantar against CAA, NRC

New Delhi, Feb 10 (PTI) Hundreds of protesters, including students and civil society members, poured onto the streets in central Delhi on Monday protesting against the amended citizenship law and the National Register of Citizens.

The protesters, carrying placards and banners of all sizes and colours, converged at Mandi House around 11 am and started marching towards Jantar Mantar where they reached around 12.30 pm via Barakhamba Road and Tolstoy Road.

Regional Indian party organizes rally to support new citizenship law

MUMBAI (Reuters) - A regional party held a rally in India’s financial capital Mumbai on Sunday to support a citizenship law introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year that has triggered nationwide protests.

India’s Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), which eases the path for non-Muslims from neighboring Muslim-majority nations Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh to gain citizenship, has triggered weeks of sometimes violent protests against Modi’s government.

India: Mamata's book on CAA sold out in book fair

Kolkata, Feb 9 (PTI) A book against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act written by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was sold out six days after it was launched in the International Kolkata Book Fair, her publisher said.

Titles favouring and opposing the CAA and the proposed nationwide NRC authored by others were also on high demand in the 12-day book fair which concluded on Sunday.

Indian Kashmir hit by general strike called by separatists

SRINAGAR, India (Reuters) - Indian-held Kashmir was hit by a general strike on Sunday called by the separatist Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) to mark the anniversary of the death of a Kashmiri man who was executed for his part in an attack on India’s parliament in 2001.

The JKLF on Thursday called for strikes on Feb. 9 and Feb. 11 to observe the anniversary of the death of Afzal Guru, and then that of its founder Maqbool Bhat.

Shops and businesses were shut on Sunday, while there was little traffic on the roads in Srinagar and other parts of Indian-held Kashmir.

New Delhi, Feb 8 (PTI) Chief Justice of India S A Bobde on Saturday said the time is ripe to devise a comprehensive legislation which contains "compulsory pre-litigation mediation" that would ensure efficiency and reduce the time of pendency for parties as well as courts.

India: Delhi Poll; 3 minority-dominated seats witness highest voter turnout

New Delhi, Feb 8 (PTI) Three minority-dominated seats of Mustafabad, Matia Mahal and Seelampur recorded the highest voter turnout in the Delhi Assembly elections on Saturday, polls officials said.

According to the data shared by officials, Mustafabad in northeast Delhi recorded 66.29 per cent voter turnout till 5 pm while Matia Mahal in Old Delhi, the area that saw anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act protests, recorded a voter turnout of 65.62 per cent.

India: Haryana Roadways to add 1,500 buses to its fleet

Chandigarh, Feb 8 (PTI) Transport Minister Mool Chand Sharma on Saturday said 1,500 new buses will soon be added to the fleet of Haryana Roadways.

He was presiding over the monthly meeting of the District Public Relations and Grievances Committees in Sonipat, according to an official statement issued here.

India: UMMnews Exit Poll predicts AAP to get maximum seats

Delhi; 09 February 2020 (UMM): Most of the txit polls for the Delhi assembly election on Saturday predicted a victory for Aam Aadmi Party with some indicating that it can even repeat its 2015 numbers when it swept 67 seats out of 70.

Ummnews poll forecast 48-56 seats for the AAP and 13-21 for the BJP and just one for Congress.

India: Exit polls predict big win for AAP

New Delhi, Feb 8 (PTI) Exit polls for the Delhi assembly election on Saturday predicted a big victory for Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party with some indicating that it can even repeat its 2015 landslide when it had bagged 67 seats in the 70-member House.

The India Today-Axis poll forecast 59-68 seats for the AAP and 2-11 for the BJP, while the ABP-CVoter put the Delhi's ruling party's tally at anywhere between 49 and 63 and that of its main rival between five to 19.

India: All-women SIT to probe gangrape case

Chandigarh, Feb 8 (PTI) Punjab's Director General of Police (DGP) Dinkar Gupta on Saturday constituted an all-women Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the January 7 gangrape case in Mohali.

The SIT is headed by Assistant Superintendent of Police Mohali City-1 Ashwani Gotyal, with Sub-Inspector Meenu Hooda and constable Amanjeet Kaur as its other members, an official statement said.
