India: Muzaffarnagar riots: BJP MLA appear in court in violence case

Muzaffarnagar (UP), Feb 6 (PTI) BJP MLA Vikram Saini and others have appeared in a court in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar district on Thursday in connection with violence during the Muzaffarnagar riots.

Special court judge Ram Singh has fixed March 13 for recording statement of the witnesses from the prosecution side.

Khatauli MLA Saini and 27 others are facing an attempt-to-murder case for their alleged role in violence at Kawal village in 2013.

India: Union govt "strangulating" Kerala by denying funds

Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 7 (PTI) Making a scathing attack on the Central government, Kerala Finance Minister Thomas Issac on Friday said the BJP-led NDA government was "strangulating" the southern state by denying funds.

Presenting the 2020-21 budget of the Pinarayi Vijayan led-LDF government, he alleged the centre has been "helping" corporates rather that the common man.

India: Detention without charges worst abomination in democracy: Chidambaram on PSA on Omar, Mehbooba

New Delhi, Feb 7 (PTI) Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Friday slammed the government for invoking the Public Safety Act against former Jammu and Kashmir chief ministers Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah and said detention without charges is the worst abomination in a democracy.

Mufti and Abdullah, besides two political stalwarts from the PDP and its arch-rival National Conference, were booked under the stringent Public Safety Act (PSA) by the administration on Thursday, officials in the union territory said.

India: Rape accused Chinmayanand gets NCC salute in UP

Shahjahanpur (UP), Feb 6 (PTI) NCC cadets from institutes run by former Union minister Swami Chinmayanand offered a salute to him and visitors at his ashram were served a special 'prasad' after his release on bail from the district prison.

Chinmayanand walked out of the prison on Wednesday, two days after being granted bail in the case in which he is accused of sexually abusing a law student.

Chinmayanand's advocate Om Singh said NCC cadets saluted him when he visited Mumukshu Ashram.

India: Already detained former CM Mehbooba, Omar and two others booked under PSA

Srinagar, Feb 6 (PTI) Former Jammu and Kashmir chief ministers Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah, besides two political stalwarts from NC and its arch-rival PDP were booked under the stringent Public Safety Act (PSA) by the administration on Thursday, officials said here.

A magistrate accompanied by police served the order to Mufti at the bungalow where she has been detained, the officials said.

Abdullah was also booked under the PSA, they said.

India: CBI arrests OSD to Delhi DyCM on bribery charges

New Delhi, Feb 6 (PTI) The CBI on Thursday arrested a Delhi government officer understood to be the Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia in an alleged bribery case of Rs 2 lakh, officials said.

Gopal Krishna Madhav was arrested in a late night operation for allegedly receiving a bribe of over Rs 2 lakh in a matter related to GST, they said.

Madhav was immediately taken to the CBI Headquarters for questioning, the officials said.

India: Kanpur youths find Ahmedabad more striking

Kanpur: "How was your visit to Ahmedabad", asked one young trader to his acquaintance. Replying him he mentioned it was too good. But he started comparing Kanpur with that largest city in Gujarat in west-central India. 

Those standing around him showed much interest in his words. He noted that the city of Ahmedabad was different from Kanpur city, while narrating the qualities of that city set up during the time of Ahmadshah in the year 1411.

Pointing joyously at the massive expansion of the residential flats there, he asserted that it appealed to me tremendously. 

India: Man kills wife over dowry in UP's Azamgarh

Azamgarh (UP), Feb 7 (PTI) A man allegedly killed his wife over dowry in Uttar Pradesh's Kaithishankarpur village, police said on Friday.

Pragya was shot dead by Deepak on Thursday after an argument over her dowry, they said.

Deepak was arrested along with his father and mother, police said.

He was harassing Pragya for dowry since their marriage in 2017, the woman's family members have alleged.

India: LS proceedings adjourned again

New Delhi, Feb 7 (PTI) The proceedings of Lok Sabha were adjourned for an hour as soon as the House met at 1 pm on Friday.

The Chair adjourned proceedings till 2 pm as soon as the House met following an earlier adjournment over uproarious scenes in the House.

The House had witnessed uproar during Question hour when Health Minister Harsh Vardhan attacked Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi at an election rally here recently.
