India: Donkey worshipped in Maharashtra

Akola, Aug 31 (PTI) While the festival of 'Pola' is dedicated to bulls in Maharashtra, people from certain communities in Akola district worship donkeys on that day.

Farmers in Maharashtra worship bulls and oxen on the occasion of 'Pola', also called as 'Bail Pola', as a mark of gratitude for their year-long hard work for farming. The festival was celebrated on August 30 this year.

Similarly, people from the Bhoi and Kumbhar (potter) communities worship donkeys as a mark of gratitude and respect, said community member Vishnu Chore.

Trump suggested nuking hurricanes: report

Washington, Aug 26 (AFP) President Donald Trump suggested dropping nuclear bombs on hurricanes before they made landfall in the United States, Axios reported Sunday.

During a hurricane briefing, Trump asked if it were possible to disrupt hurricanes forming off the coast of Africa by dropping a nuclear bomb in the eye of the storm, Axios wrote.

According to an anonymous source, meeting attendees left the briefing thinking, "What do we do with this?" Axios did not say when this conversation took place.

North Korea foreign minister calls Pompeo ‘poisonous plant’

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea’s foreign minister on Friday called U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo a “poisonous plant of American diplomacy” and vowed to “shutter the absurd dream” that sanctions will force a change in Pyongyang.

The North’s blistering rhetoric may dim the prospect for an early resumption of nuclear negotiations between the countries. A senior U.S. diplomat said earlier this week that Washington was ready to restart the talks, a day after U.S. and South Korean militaries ended their regular drills that Pyongyang called an invasion rehearsal.

India: Groom fails NRC test, wedding called off

Guwahati, Aug 20 (PTI) A family in Silchar in Assam has called off the wedding of their daughter when the groom failed to provide his citizenship credentials.

Dilwar Hussain Laskar, of Nayagram village near Silchar was in love with a local girl and the two families had agreed to their marriage.

But trouble arose when the girl's family wanted to know from his family on August 15 whether his name was in the citizens register.

India: Three govt offices in UP fined for breeding mosquitoes

Noida (UP), Aug 14 (PTI) Three government offices here have been penalised for not maintaining proper cleanliness leading to breeding of mosquitoes on their premises, according to District Health Department officials.

The penalty has been imposed on City Magistrate office in Sector 19, local election office in Sector 18 and the district Transport office in Sector 34, the officials said.

India: BJP CM of Uttarakhand says cow only animal that exhales oxygen

Dehradun, Jul 26 (PTI) Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat has kicked up a row by claiming that cow is the only animal which inhales and exhales oxygen, and has asserted breathing problems can be cured by massaging it.

A video went viral on Thursday showing Rawat extolling the medicinal properties of cow milk and urine at a function here.

In the video, he said cows not only inhale oxygen but also exhale it.

India: 8 arrested in Akola district under Black Magic Act

Akola, Jul 26 (PTI) A gang of eight people, two of them from adjoining Madhya Pradesh, was arrested for allegedly practicing black magic while looking for a "hidden treasure" here in Maharashtra, police said on Friday.

Acting on a tip-off, a police team went to Dahikhed village near here on Thursday and nabbed these people, all part of a gang, when they were conducting rituals at an agriculture field as part of black magic, Akot rural police station in-charge Inspector Dnyanoba Phad said.
