IIT Roorkee testing floating device to produce electricity from river

Roorkee, Jan 30 (PTI) Scientists at IIT Roorkee are testing a floating device that can generate electricity from flowing surface water of rivers and streams, paving the way for an alternative source of renewable energy.

Traditional hydropower plants require the construction of large-scale dams, which have significant ecological and environmental consequences.

Pakistan not to attend Kolkata book fair due to visa issues

Kolkata, Jan 28 (PTI) Six publishers of Pakistan had evinced interest in participating in the 43rd International Kolkata Book Fair to be inaugurated on Thursday, but they would not be able to do it because of visa issues, organisers said here Monday.

A total of 26 countries from across the world will be attending the book fair which will witness participation of authors from Russia, Costa Rica, Spain, Scotland, Australia, Argentina, Bangladesh and this year's theme country Guatemala.

Indian EVM is chor machine: Farooq Abdullah

Kolkata, Jan 19 (PTI) National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah Saturday called the EVM the "chor machine" and demanded that the ballot paper system be brought back for the sake of transparency.

India: Entire nation united to defeat BJP: Deve Gowda

Kolkata, Jan 18 (PTI) Former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda Friday said the entire nation was united to defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government at the Centre.

He praised West Bengal chief minister and TMC president Mamata Banerjee and termed her efforts to make way for a secular government in the country as "historic".

"Mamata is a great leader. She is hard working and such people are required in politics," Gowda said on his arrival here ahead of Saturday's mega opposition rally.

India: Entire north east burning because of Citizenship Bill

Kolkata, Jan 19 (PTI) Zoram Nationalist Party leader Lalduhawma on Saturday said the entire north east was "burning" because of the Citizenship Amendment Bill.

"If the bill was enacted ... , India will no longer be the place that it used to be ... so we want a secular government at the Centre, so that this bill was withdrawn or exemption must be given to the north east," he said at the opposition rally at the Brigade Parade ground here.
