Indian Army gets more fire power with 'Dhanush' artillery guns

Kolkata, Apr 8 (PTI) In a major boost to its fire power, the Indian Army on Monday received the first batch of six 'Dhanush' artillery guns from the Ordnance Factory Board (OFB), a defence official said.

The guns were handed over by Saurabh Kumar, Director General, Ordnance Factories and the OFB chairman, at a ceremony organised at the Gun Carriage Factory in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh.

India: Mamata welcomes Advani's statement

Kolkata, Apr 4 (PTI) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Thursday welcomed the statement of veteran BJP leader L K Advani and said opposition parties who raise their voices are indeed not "anti-national".

Advani said his party has never regarded those who disagreed with it politically as "anti-national" or "enemies" but only as adversaries.

India: BJP govt has taken over all premier institutions: Mamata

Kolkata, Mar 31 (PTI) In an apparent reference to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's announcement of DRDO's recent space achievement, Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee Sunday said the BJP government has taken over all premier institutions in the country.

On March 27, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted Mission Shakti, an anti-satellite missile test, from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island launch complex, paving the way for the country to join an elite space club comprising the US, Russia, China with such specialised capability.

Indian HC stays criminal proceedings against Amit Shah

Kolkata, Mar 28 (PTI) The Calcutta High Court Thursday stayed criminal proceedings against BJP president Amit Shah in connection with an FIR that accused him of provoking violence in his speech in January.

Questioning how Shah's claim that the Mamata Banerjee government in West Bengal would fall on the day of counting of votes of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections could possibly incite violence, Justice Jay Sengupta stayed proceedings against him for four weeks.

India: Abhijit Paik gets 10-year RI for raping girl

Kolkata, Mar 26 (PTI) A city court Tuesday sentenced a 22-year-old man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping a girl after forcibly marrying her at a temple.

Abhijit Paik was found guilty of kidnapping the girl from her home in Narkeldanga area in the eastern part of the city and raping her.

Indian Polls: BJP insulted Advani by dropping him, says 'sad' Mamata

Kolkata, Mar 26 (PTI) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Tuesday described LK Advani as one of the pillars of the BJP and said leaving him out of its candidates list is an insult to the veteran leader.

India: Explosives seized from truck in Bengal, one held

Kolkata/Bankura, Mar 17 (PTI) The West Bengal CID on Sunday intercepted a truck at Beliator in Bankura district and seized a large amount of explosive material stored inside.

A senior officer of West Bengal police said around 250 packets of gelatin sticks and 229 bags of ammonium nitrate were recovered from the truck that came from Telangana.

Indian Polls: EC deploys first batch of central forces in West Bengal

Kolkata, Mar 15; PTI/GANASHAKTI:  The Election Commission (EC) on Friday deployed seven companies of central para-military forces in as many districts of West Bengal, ahead of the seven-phase Lok Sabha elections beginning April 11.

Three more companies will also move in by late this evening for their deployment in South 24-Parganas district and Kolkata, Additional Chief Electoral Officer Sanjay Basu said.

The seven companies have been deployed in the districts of North Dinajpur, Malda, Murshidabad, Birbhum, East Midnapore, West Midnapore and North 24-Parganas.
